The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Hyderabad has signed a significant partnership with Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) to transform the shipbuilding industry using cutting-edge technology. The collaboration focuses on leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Digital Twin technologies to improve operations in maritime sectors.
This strategic alliance, which also includes Neer Interactive Solutions and Andhra Mahila Sabha (AMS) College, aims to enhance efficiency, security, and sustainability in shipbuilding. The Centre for Geospatial AI and Digital Twins (CGDT) at IIT Hyderabad will spearhead this initiative, which is touted as the first of its kind in India and across Asia.
According to a press release, this partnership is set to drive innovation in several key areas. By optimizing vessel design and implementing enhanced security measures, the team will introduce advanced 360-degree surveillance solutions, powered by AI technologies. The goal is to create a smart and secure environment within shipyards.
Professor BS Murty, the Director of IIT Hyderabad, highlighted the importance of this initiative, expressing that it will set new global standards in India’s shipbuilding sector. He emphasized the collaboration’s potential to pioneer a comprehensive Geospatial AI model that can seriously improve maritime security.
In attendance at the signing were notable figures including BK Upadhyay, the Chairman of Goa Shipyard Limited, and Dittakavi Chakrapani, Chairman of AMS. The collaborative effort is expected to reshape the future of shipbuilding, enhancing not only the efficiency but also the environmental sustainability of the maritime industry.
This initiative marks a significant step forward for India’s shipbuilding capabilities, integrating advanced technology into traditional processes to ensure a safer and more efficient maritime environment.
