In a remarkable feat of medical coordination, surgeons at Star Hospitals in Hyderabad successfully performed a simultaneous liver and kidney transplant on a 54-year-old businessman using organs donated by his wife and son. The 12-hour procedure, involving a team of over 50 medical professionals, offered a new lease on life for Ramarao, who suffered from severe liver cirrhosis, kidney failure, and other life-threatening complications.

The complex surgeries, lasting 12 hours, were carried out simultaneously in adjacent operating rooms. The medical team, consisting of over 50 doctors and healthcare professionals, worked with exceptional coordination and precision. Both donors were discharged within a week and are reported to be in excellent health.

According to the statement, Dr. Mettu Srinivas Reddy, Director of Star Liver Institute and the lead surgeon, explained that Ramarao had been battling severe health complications, including liver cirrhosis caused by Hepatitis B, kidney failure, and other serious conditions. When admitted, he was critically ill, suffering from severe infection, low blood pressure, hepatic coma, and high toxin levels in his blood due to the combined failure of his liver and kidneys.

“After the surgery, the patient had a smooth recovery without any complications,” Dr. Reddy said.

The surgical team included experts from various departments, including Dr. Golamari Srinivasa Reddy, Hepatology and Transplant Hepatology Lead; Dr. Sridhar, Director of Nephrology and Renal Transplant; and Dr. Ravindranath, Chief Mentor at Star Liver Institute. Their collaborative efforts ensured the success of this life-saving procedure.
