Speaking to NSH, he elucidated his innovative approach to integrating green chemistry principles into drug design and synthesis.

With your profound experience in drug discovery and development, how do you integrate principles of green chemistry in the design and synthesis of novel compounds? Could you share examples where green chemistry has significantly influenced the development of therapeutic agents?
– In drug discovery, I prioritize green chemistry principles by emphasizing the use of safer and more sustainable synthetic routes, minimizing waste generation, and reducing the environmental impact of chemical processes. For example, we employ solvent-free or aqueous reactions, utilize renewable starting materials, and optimize reaction conditions to maximize atom efficiency. One notable example is the synthesis of an anti-cancer drug using a catalytic process that minimizes waste and energy consumption, resulting in a more sustainable manufacturing process.
Given your specialization and the impressive number of patents you hold, what innovations in green chemistry do you see as most promising for the pharmaceutical industry? Additionally, what challenges do researchers face in applying green chemistry principles in the synthesis of drugs, and how can these be overcome?
– In the pharmaceutical industry, innovations in green chemistry offer immense promise, particularly in the development of greener synthetic methodologies and the design of eco-friendly drug delivery systems. Continuous manufacturing and Nanotechnology-based drug delivery platforms, for instance, hold significant potential for enhancing drug efficacy while minimizing environmental impact. However, researchers face challenges such as scalability, regulatory compliance, and cost-effectiveness in implementing green chemistry principles. Overcoming these hurdles requires collaborative efforts, technological innovation, and supportive regulatory frameworks.
As a professor handling courses on Technologies for Green Chemistry, what strategies do you employ to instil the importance of sustainable practices in your students, especially those focusing on drug action and process chemistry? Looking ahead, what areas within green chemistry do you believe hold the most potential for ground-breaking research and educational focus?
As a professor, I employ interactive teaching methods, case studies, and real-world examples to underscore the importance of sustainable practices in drug discovery and process chemistry. By highlighting the environmental and societal benefits of green chemistry, I aim to inspire students to integrate sustainability into their research and future careers. Looking ahead, areas such as green solvents, catalysis, and biocatalysis hold tremendous potential for trailblazing research and educational focus, paving the way for a more sustainable pharmaceutical industry.
