Did you know that Telangana workers rank among the top workers in the nation in terms of daily labour hours? Compared to their counterparts in other Indian states, Telangana government employees work longer hours.
While industry leaders’ calls for Indian workers to put in 70 hours a week continue to garner attention and condemnation from a variety of sources, the average Telangana employee works 433 minutes (7.21 hours) every day, compared to the 422-minute national average.
Assuming a six-day workweek, the average weekly workweek for Telangana State’s private and public sector employees is 43.26 hours. Remarkably, Telangana workers rank second among South Indian states, behind their Tamil Nadu counterparts, who put in an average of 436 minutes (7.26 hours) a day at work.
According to a research titled “Time Spent on Employment-Related Activities in India: A Note,” which was written by Dr. Shammika Ravi, a member of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council (EAC), “Indians spend an average of 422 minutes a day on paid economic activities, or “working.” This is equivalent to 42.2 hours per week for a six-day workweek. The notable differences between States are the most intriguing feature of this investigation.
“Goa and the majority of Northeastern states report fewer than 360 minutes per day (less than 6 hours per day), whereas the Union Territories of Daman & Diu and Dadra & Nagar Haveli report more than 600 minutes per day (more than 10 hours),” the survey stated.
The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) of the Government of India performed the “Time Use Survey Data” (2019), a comprehensive dataset comprising 518,744 people from 1,38,799 households nationwide.
One little drawback is that the data is from six years ago. In terms of the amount of time spent on economic activities, it can, nevertheless, reflect the general features of “work culture,” according to the study.
With an average of 494 minutes, or 8.23 hours per day or 49.38 hours per week (assuming a 6-day workweek), Telangana State employees lead the government sector. They are closely followed by Rajasthani employees, who work an average of 466 minutes, or 7.76 hours per day.
