Tired of constantly replacing your batteries? What if there was a power source that could last longer than a human lifetime?
Scientists in the UK have invented a groundbreaking battery that could last thousands of years. Developed by researchers at the University of Bristol and the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA), the carbon-14 diamond battery uses a radioactive material, carbon-14, to produce electricity. This innovation has the potential to revolutionize energy solutions by providing a long-lasting and sustainable power source.
How It Works
The battery is made using carbon-14, a radioactive isotope known for its use in dating ancient objects. This isotope generates energy through its natural radioactive decay. To ensure safety and durability, the carbon-14 is encased in a diamond shell. This unique design prevents radiation from escaping while converting the energy into electricity.
Unlike solar panels, which transform sunlight into energy, this diamond battery relies on fast-moving particles emitted during carbon-14’s decay. The diamond casing absorbs the radiation and produces small but continuous amounts of electricity. Because of carbon-14’s long half-life of 5,700 years, the battery retains half its power even after thousands of years.
Safe and Eco-Friendly
Sarah Clark, a director at UKAEA, emphasized the safety of the battery, explaining that the diamond casing makes it safe to use while providing a steady power supply. Additionally, the battery helps reduce nuclear waste by recycling carbon-14 from discarded graphite blocks found in nuclear reactors.
Potential Applications
The diamond battery is particularly useful for devices and environments where traditional power sources are not practical. In healthcare, it can power devices like pacemakers and hearing aids, sparing patients from the need for frequent battery replacements.
In space exploration, the battery could be a game-changer by powering satellites and spacecraft for extended missions without the need for recharging or replacement. This innovative technology not only offers a safer way to generate power but also provides a sustainable solution to managing nuclear waste while powering devices for generations.
