The Chenab Rail Bridge, an integral part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, stands as a monumental achievement in modern engineering. Constructed to connect the Kashmir Valley with the rest of India, the bridge is designed to endure extreme environmental and geological challenges. The bridge is located between Bakkal and Kauri in the Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir. The bridge is made of steel and concrete and was designed by Konkan Railway, Afcons Infrastructure, and DRDO. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Chenab Rail Bridge on February 20, 2024.

– The arch consists of steel boxes filled with concrete to improve stability.

– The project involved the creation of 26 kilometres of motorable access roads to support logistics.

– Built in Seismic Zone IV, the bridge is equipped to handle earthquakes of up to magnitude 8.

– Designed to endure wind speeds of over 266 km/h and temperatures as low as -20°C.

– Dual carriageway: 14 meters wide with a 1.2-meter central verge, enabling train speeds of up to 100 km/h.

– High-intensity blast resistance is integrated into the design for enhanced safety.

4. Innovative Cable Cranes:

– Engineers used 900-meter-high cable cranes—among the tallest in the world—for over 2.5 years to construct the bridge’s massive arch.

– The erection of the arch members was done using overhead cable cranes for the first time on Indian Railways.

– The most sophisticated ‘Tekla’ software was used for structural detailing.

– The bridge traverses a deep gorge of the Chenab River, set in the rugged Himalayan terrain.

– Construction teams had to contend with frequent landslides, snowfall, thunderstorms, and high winds ranging between 50-60 km/h.
