Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), India’s state-owned telecommunications enterprise, has inked strategic memorandums of understanding with four global technology leaders—Ericsson, Nokia, Qualcomm, and Cisco—to launch a comprehensive training initiative at its apex facility in Jabalpur. The center, announced this Monday, is poised to become the country’s first industry-led national Telecom Innovation, Research and Training Centre (TIRTC), focused on advanced skilling in 5G, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and cybersecurity.
The collaboration will deliver training for more than 2,000 students annually, blending theoretical coursework with hands-on exposure to cutting-edge industry technologies. Each partner brings unique expertise: Ericsson and Nokia will lead instruction in next-generation network infrastructure and 5G deployment; Qualcomm is set to offer courses in application development for mobile and IoT platforms; and Cisco will provide leadership in cybersecurity and enterprise networking best practices.
BSNL’s initiative targets a pressing skills gap within India’s telecom and IT sectors, aiming to foster a new generation of engineers and technologists capable of driving innovation across the country’s rapidly expanding digital economy. “We’re creating India’s most advanced talent pipeline for telecom and digital services,” said BSNL executive officials, citing the need to prepare for upcoming rollouts of 5G services and advanced network management.
As India positions itself as a global hub for telecom innovation, the Jabalpur training institute will double as a research and development think tank. Students will gain exposure to real-world challenges and participate in industry internships, boosting employability and supporting the government’s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat (“self-reliant India”).
The launch underscores the deepening relationships between Indian public enterprises and multinational tech manufacturers, a trend expected to accelerate as 5G technology and AI applications reshape national infrastructure. With over 2,000 trainees entering the workforce each year, BSNL’s center could help set new benchmarks for telecom education and contribute to sustained digital growth.
