The BITS Pilani Hyderabad campus has taken a significant step toward advancing research in aerospace, automotive, and structural engineering with the inauguration of a cutting-edge wind tunnel facility. Named the “Nalini Kurra Wind Tunnel Facility,” it has been generously sponsored by Goutham Kurra, an alumnus from the 1993-98 batch.
Designed entirely in-house, the facility aims to drive innovation in fields such as aerodynamics, renewable energy, and advanced engineering. The advanced technology behind the wind tunnel allows for precise testing of airflow over objects, enabling simulations of various wind speeds and environmental conditions.
This new facility is expected to benefit students and faculty involved in aerospace engineering, mechanical design, and structural analysis. It will also provide startups with a platform to test prototypes for drones, wind turbines, and electric vehicles. By fostering interdisciplinary projects, the wind tunnel will strengthen hands-on learning experiences for students at the Hyderabad campus.
Moreover, the facility is set to play a pivotal role in enhancing India’s aerospace and defense sectors. Collaborations with industry leaders and organizations like ISRO and DRDO are expected to emerge from this initiative, contributing to the country’s innovation ecosystem.
According to the statement, Goutham Kurra shared his motivation for supporting the project. “BITS Pilani has been instrumental in shaping my career. It’s an honor to give back to the institution that helped me grow. I hope this facility will accelerate research and inspire new innovations in aerospace and quantum physics,” he said.
Professor V Ramgopal Rao, Vice Chancellor of the BITS Pilani Hyderabad campus, highlighted the importance of the facility. “The Nalini Kurra Wind Tunnel Facility is more than just an infrastructure addition; it reflects our dedication to research excellence and our commitment to fostering groundbreaking innovation,” he remarked.
