Biological E has announced an exciting partnership with Bavarian Nordic to produce a vaccine for Chikungunya, a viral disease transmitted by mosquitoes. This collaboration aims to make the vaccine more accessible in low- and middle-income countries, where such diseases are more prevalent.
The Chikungunya vaccine, developed by Bavarian Nordic, has recently received approval in the United States for individuals aged 12 and older. This approval marks a significant step in combating the disease, which can cause severe joint pain and other health issues. Biological E, based in Hyderabad, India, will enhance its existing facility to manufacture the vaccine, with plans for future production capacity.
The partnership involves a technology transfer, which means that Biological E will learn how to produce the vaccine while also having the option to expand into producing the active ingredients later. This collaboration is expected to create around 300 new jobs in Hyderabad, helping to boost the local economy.
Paul Chaplin, the CEO of Bavarian Nordic, emphasized the importance of expanding the vaccine’s availability, especially in vulnerable populations that face a higher risk of Chikungunya. Mahima Datla, the Managing Director of Biological E, expressed optimism about working together to ensure that more people in need can access this vital vaccine.
Overall, this partnership is a promising development for global health, as it seeks to improve access to vaccines in regions that often struggle with outbreaks of infectious diseases. The collaboration highlights the importance of working together to address health challenges and protect communities from diseases like Chikungunya.
