The Axiom Mission 4, designed to send astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS), has been subject to several delays, with the most recent postponement pushing the launch date to June 22, 2025. Originally scheduled for May 29, the mission faced multiple rescheduling, first to June 8, followed by June 10 and 11, primarily due to a liquid oxygen leak discovered in the Falcon 9 rocket’s boosters. This delay allows for continued evaluations by NASA and Axiom Space following recent repairs on the ISS’s Zvezda service module.
The upcoming mission promises to be significant as it features Indian astronaut Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, representing a leap forward for India in commercial space exploration. Alongside Shukla, the crew includes experienced NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson as commander, Tibor Kapu from Hungary, and Slawosz Uznanski-Wisniewski from Poland, both serving as mission specialists. They are set to launch aboard a Falcon 9 rocket from NASA’s Kennedy Space Centre in Florida.
Shubhanshu Shukla will conduct seven scientific experiments stemming from Indian research and engage in collaborative studies with NASA. This mission not only marks a critical milestone for the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) but also showcases India’s growing involvement in global space endeavors. It is part of Axiom’s broader ambition to facilitate commercial access to low-Earth orbit and to eventually develop the world’s first commercial space station.
