Tanay’s Colours of Resilience
The painting features a scene reminiscent of dawn, with a half sun rising and its rays spreading across the sky. The colours likely include soft hues of yellow, orange, and pink, blending harmoniously to create a serene and warm atmosphere. When the painting is viewed in reverse, it transforms into a more vibrant and dynamic composition, with bold and abstract colours that evoke a different emotional response. This duality adds depth and intrigue to the artwork, making it a versatile piece that can be appreciated from multiple perspectives.
Another expansive canvas captures the meeting point of sea and sky. Azure waves kiss the shore, while intermittent clouds cast gentle shadows. Amidst wild VIBGYOR-colored bushes, a tiny habitat stands resilient. Brilliant acrylics create texture, inviting us to lose ourselves in that coastal reverie.
– Those were a couple of paintings of AennamTanay, 22-year-old young boy, suffering from ASD (Autistic Spectrum Disorders).

In the quietude interspersed with storms within his autistic world, Tanay crafts a vibrant symphony of colours. An adept abstract artist, he wields acrylics, textures, and mixed media to breathe life into canvases, creating pieces that dance with vivacity and playful themes. His dedication to each stroke and blend of colors is profound, enabling him to express nuanced emotions and dialogues through his art with piercing clarity. Tanay possesses a remarkable ability to distill complex themes into powerful, emotive compositions, characterized by his distinctive and bold lines.
Under the watchful and resilient guidance of his mother, Sampurna Rani, Tanay has harnessed his inner strength to navigate the challenges of his mental illness. His disability, far from being a barrier, fuels his creative expression, enabling his artwork to resonate deeply and widely. Each canvas, once blank, transforms under his touch into a mesmerizing spectacle, a testament to his extraordinary capability to see the world as an endless palette of emotional hues. Lacking the ability to communicate through conventional means, Tanay has found his unique voice in the universal language of art, making each piece a vibrant dialogue of his inner experiences.
“He doesn’t know I am Amma”
Speaking to NSH, Tanay’s mother, Sampurna Rani, shares the initial challenges they faced, including rejection from schools and societal stigma. However, a glimmer of hope emerged when Tanay’s father suggested painting. With unwavering dedication, Tanay mastered the paintbrush, transforming his canvas into a world of emotions and expressions.
“My son has never called me ‘Amma’,” Sampurna shares, her voice filled with a mix of hope and sorrow. “He still doesn’t know how to eat independently.” Despite these challenges, she remains a pillar of strength for Tanay.
When Tanay joined NIEPID, the institution recognized his talent and provided crucial support. With guidance from his teachers, he not only mastered color mixing but also began designing calendars featuring his artwork. Today, his paintings command impressive prices, selling for up to sixteen thousand rupees.
P. Rajendar, a Rehabilitation officer at NIEPID, speaks about Tanay’s talent, “Tanay is one of many students here who possess extraordinary abilities. His paintings convey deep emotions and are in high demand. We recently submitted his work for a presidential award.”
Tanay’s journey is a testament to human resilience. His mother’s unwavering love and support, coupled with NIEPID’s guidance, have transformed his life. Through his art, Tanay is not only expressing himself but also inspiring others, proving that every individual, regardless of their challenges, possesses unique talents waiting to be discovered.
