Mumps is a viral infection mainly affecting children and young adults. According to the World Health Organisation(WHO), It’s caused by the mumps virus, which spreads through direct contact or airborne droplets from infected individuals’ respiratory tract. Symptoms for Mumps include fever, headache, loss of appetite, and swollen glands around the ears, cheeks, and jaw areas which last for 7 to 14 days.
Though usually mild and self-resolving, mumps can lead to complications like encephalitis, deafness, or orchitis in males.
Treatment focuses on symptom relief, such as rest, hydration, and pain management. Cold compresses can reduce swelling, and soft foods are recommended for comfort while chewing.
Preventive measures include staying hydrated, getting enough rest, and using cold compresses on swollen areas. The MMR vaccine (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) is essential for prevention and is usually given during childhood.
There’s no specific treatment for mumps, so managing symptoms is key. Pregnant women should consult a doctor if infected. Overall, vaccination and preventive measures play a crucial role in controlling mumps outbreaks.
