Comprehensive Modernization Initiative Transforms Flying Experience
Air India has commenced its ambitious $400 million fleet retrofit program with the inaugural Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner (VT-ANT) departing for Boeing’s Victorville, California facility in July 2025, marking the beginning of a comprehensive modernization effort spanning 39 legacy aircraft. The widebody retrofit program encompasses all 26 Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners and 13 Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, scheduled for completion by October 2028, though timeline adjustments reflect global supply chain challenges affecting the aviation industry.
The transformation introduces brand-new three-class configurations featuring Business Class, Premium Economy, and Economy sections, along with advanced inflight entertainment systems, refurbished lavatories and galleys, and updated soft furnishings aligned with Air India’s new service standards. Simultaneously, the airline implements a Reliability Enhancement Programme upgrading avionics and critical components to meet latest industry standards, reducing operational disruptions while seven aircraft undergo comprehensive heavy maintenance D-checks.
The narrowbody segment demonstrates remarkable progress with 16 of 27 legacy Airbus A320neo aircraft already completed, featuring all-new cabin configurations progressively deployed on key domestic and short-haul international routes. The addition of a third retrofit line at GMR’s MRO facility in Hyderabad has accelerated completion timelines, targeting September 2025 for full narrowbody completion. This comprehensive modernization represents Air India’s strategic commitment to delivering world-class flying experiences while enhancing operational reliability across its legacy fleet, positioning the airline for sustained growth in highly competitive aviation markets.
