Researchers at DeepMind claimed in a report published in the journal Nature that GenCast performs better than the world’s most effective operational forecasting system, the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF).
GenCast, an AI weather prediction model developed by Google’s DeepMind team, has surpassed the world’s best weather forecasting system.
Google claimed in a statement that its new AI model “improves the prediction of weather uncertainties and dangers, giving faster, more accurate forecasts up to 15 days ahead.”
The IT behemoth claims that GenCast represents a significant breakthrough in AI-based weather forecasting, expanding upon its earlier deterministic weather model that offered a single, optimal forecast for the future.
A GenCast forecast, on the other hand, consists of an ensemble of at least 50 projections, each of which represents a potential weather trajectory. The recent, quick advancements in image, video, and music production are supported by generative AI models called diffusion models, like GenCast.
Google stated that GenCast is different from others in that it is tailored to the Earth’s spherical geometry and learns to precisely produce the intricate probability distribution of future weather situations when given the most recent weather data.
Officials can save money, prevent damage, and save more lives if they have more precise projections of the hazards of extreme weather. Think about tropical cyclones, which are sometimes referred to as typhoons and hurricanes. It is crucial to have more precise and sophisticated warnings about where they will land. Google said that GenCast provides better forecasts of the paths of these fatal storms.
Anyone can incorporate these meteorological data into their own models and research workflows thanks to the company’s upcoming release of historical and real-time forecasts from GenCast and earlier models.
GenCast is a component of Google’s expanding collection of next-generation AI-based weather models, which also includes Google Research’s NeuralGCM, SEEDS, and flood models, as well as Google DeepMind’s AI-based deterministic medium-range forecasts.
