AI breakthrough in Breast Cancer Detection: Study claims a 17% increase in Screening Accuracy | Neo Science Hub

In a significant discovery, scientists from the University of Lubeck in Germany discovered that artificial intelligence (AI) can increase cancer detection rates by almost 17%. The results come from a recent study that included the world’s largest-ever implementation of AI use in breast cancer screenings.

A total of 4,60,000 women were screened by 119 radiologists for the study. The radiologists were free to decide whether or not to employ AI. According to the study, radiologists supported by AI were able to detect cancer at a rate of 6.7 per 1,000 tests, a 17.6% increase over conventional readings.

Up to 65% of AI-assisted readings for requested biopsies revealed malignancy, compared to 59% without AI. The study also showed that, without sacrificing accuracy, AI enabled 43% faster reading times, which decreased workloads.

Traditional breast screenings require radiologists to analyze images, which is a laborious and error-prone process. Early breast detection can save lives. AI has made it possible for radiologists to spot questionable cases and lower the number of missed detections.

The participants, who took part in mammography screenings between 2021 and 2023, ranged in age from 50 to 69. AI was employed in around half of the screenings, with the remaining ones using conventional procedures. The study’s goal was to determine whether AI could help radiologists detect more malignancies without needless recalls. Recall occurs in cancer detection when mammography results require further imaging or comparison with previous mammograms.

Role of AI

The study found that AI increased detection, reduced false alarms, and enhanced accuracy. In essence, among women who underwent remembered mammograms, AI improved the success rate of detecting real cancer cases. The study demonstrates how AI can aid in early detection and is intended to support radiologists rather than replace them. Radiologists can concentrate on urgent cases and save time on regular instances by using the AI-assisted screening, which classified cases as normal and suspicious and communicated alerts for potential oversights.

According to the study, AI can improve the speed, accuracy, and patient comfort of breast cancer screening. It might help with the radiology shortage and boost the effectiveness of the medical field.

The study, which was published in Nature Medicine, is titled “Nationwide real-world use of AI for cancer diagnosis in population-based mammography screening.”
