A Stirring Call for Coexistence & Ecological Empathy | Neo Science Hub

“Elephant Wings of Freedom” by Dr. Chaitanya Sridhar is a profound exploration of the intricate relationship between humans and elephants, delving deep into the socio-ecological dynamics that define this bond. Drawing from her expertise as a psychologist and environmental conservationist, Dr. Sridhar presents a narrative that is both engaging and stimulating to the reader.

A hundred years ago, India’s vast forests teemed with over 1,00,000 wild elephants roaming freely across uninterrupted corridors. Today, that number has dwindled to approximately 27,000 in the wild, confined to increasingly fragmented habitats due to deforestation, rapid urbanization, and infrastructure development. Once revered as sacred beings and symbols of cultural pride, elephants now face growing threats from human-elephant conflict, with over 400 human and 100 elephant deaths reported annually due to such encounters. While India still harbours over 60% of Asia’s wild elephant population, their survival hangs in the balance, trapped between ancient reverence and modern neglect.

The book begins by challenging the prevalent narratives that often portray elephants as mere intruders in human spaces. Dr. Sridhar emphasizes that such perceptions stem from a lack of understanding of elephant behaviours and the ecological disruptions caused by constant human activities. She argues that continuous habitat loss, fragmented of migration corridors, and rabid urban expansion are primary drivers pushing these majestic creatures into closer contact with human settlements. In the name of development, we directly dwell into the domains of the mighty elephant.

One of the standout aspects of the book is its emphasis on the need for coexistence. Dr. Sridhar advocates for a standard shift in how we perceive and interact with wildlife. She suggests that by fostering empathy and understanding, communities can develop strategies that ensure the safety and well-being of both humans and elephants. This includes community-based conservation efforts, regular education initiatives, and policy reforms that prioritize ecological balance.

Dr. Chaitanya Sridhar is a pioneering Sports and Depth Psychologist with over 20 years of experience mentoring elite athletes, including Olympic medallists. She holds a PhD from the University of Australia and gained national recognition as the first woman Sports Psychologist in the IPL with Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2020. A key figure in shaping India’s sports psychology field, she consults for top academies, advises INSPA, and co-launched India’s first sports science online course with IIT-Madras.

Beyond sports, Dr. Sridhar is deeply committed to elephant welfare. As founder of AANE (All About Nature of Elephants), she has worked since 2019 on rehabilitating captive elephants. Her unique integration of human and animal psychology informs her TEDx talks and writing, positioning her as a powerful voice for holistic well-being — in both athletics and wildlife.

Dr. Sridhar’s narrative is enriched by real-life anecdotes and case studies, providing readers with tangible examples of successful human-elephant coexistence. These stories not only highlight the challenges faced but also the resilience and adaptability of communities that have embraced harmonious living with wildlife. Packed in 200 pages spread over nine chapters the book has various illustrations to emphasise the nuances of the gentle giants, However realistic photographs would have enhanced the books  pictorial content.

The book delves into the cultural significance of elephants in Indian society. Dr. Sridhar explores how these animals have been revered in mythology, religion, and art, underscoring the deep-rooted connections that exist between humans and elephants. By revisiting these cultural ties, she suggests that rekindling traditional respect for elephants can play a pivotal role in modern conservation efforts.

In conclusion, “Elephant Wings of Freedom” is not just a book about wildlife conservation; it’s a clarion call to action. Dr. Chaitanya deftly weaves together psychology, ecology, and cultural studies to present a holistic view of human-elephant interactions. Her insights compel readers to reflect on their role in the broader ecological tapestry and inspire a commitment to fostering a world where humans and elephants can thrive together. To me, as a lover of visuals, the most fascinating is the cover photos of sleeping elephants in a grassy meadow.
