Gopi Thotakura, an entrepreneur and pilot, is gearing up to make history as the first Indian space tourist on Blue Origin’s NS-25 mission, led by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. He joins a select group of six crew members for this groundbreaking journey, marking a significant milestone for India’s space exploration.
Thotakura’s venture into space will not only make him the first Indian space tourist but also the second Indian overall to journey beyond Earth’s atmosphere, following Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma in 1984. While the exact date of the flight is yet to be announced, Blue Origin confirms that this mission will be the seventh human flight for the New Shepard program and the 25th in its history.
The New Shepard vehicle, developed by Blue Origin, is designed for sub-orbital space tourism and boasts full reusability, making it an innovative step forward in space travel.
Described by Blue Origin as a skilled pilot and aviator, Thotakura has a rich background in aviation, having learned to fly even before driving a car. He co-founded Preserve Life Corp, a center for holistic wellness and applied health, and has extensive experience flying various aircraft, including jets, bush planes, aerobatic planes, seaplanes, gliders, and hot air balloons. Additionally, he has served as an international medical jet pilot, showcasing his versatility in the aviation field.
Despite his achievements in aviation, Thotakura is also an avid traveler, with recent adventures including a successful summit of Mt Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. His upcoming journey into space marks a significant milestone not only for himself but also for India’s space exploration aspirations.
