Young adults at high risk: Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Irritable bowel syndrome

Health experts warn that young adults facing high stress levels, leading sedentary lives with no exercise and consuming poor diets are at increased risk of developing irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). IBS is a common gastrointestinal disorder characterized by symptoms like abdominal cramping, diarrhoea, constipation, bloating, and gas.

While the exact causes of IBS are unclear, experts suggest it may be linked to a sensitive colon or immune system. The condition is prevalent among young people aged 20-40, mainly due to factors like stress, lack of physical activity, and unhealthy eating habits.

Young individuals often consume fast food high in spices, oils, sugars, salts, fats, and artificial additives, which lack nutrition and can disrupt gut bacteria balance, leading to IBS symptoms. Additionally, excessive mental stress can disrupt hormones and affect digestion, while anxiety can impact stomach function, causing discomfort.

Experts note a rise in IBS cases in India due to these factors. Although IBS doesn’t cause damage to the digestive tract or increase the risk of colon cancer, it can significantly impact daily life routines.

To lower the risk of IBS, individuals should adopt a diet rich in fiber, avoid alcohol, engage in regular exercise, and manage stress through activities like yoga and meditation.

It’s crucial not to ignore IBS symptoms such as bloating, constipation, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, or cramps, as untreated IBS can lead to complications affecting the colon.

If experiencing these symptoms, individuals are advised to consult a gastroenterologist promptly to prevent further complications. Early intervention is key to managing IBS effectively and maintaining digestive health.
