In a world increasingly reliant on digital connectivity, 2024 stood as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities within the infrastructure supporting our daily lives. The year witnessed some of the most significant internet outages that disrupted countless services, affecting millions of users globally. This article offers an overview of the ten largest internet outages of 2024, highlighting their causes and implications.

 1. Facebook – March 5, 2024

Arguably the biggest outage of 2024 occurred on March 5, impacting over 11.1 million users worldwide. Not only was Facebook unavailable, but Instagram, its sister platform, was also affected. The disruption caused significant frustration among users who rely on these platforms for both personal and business communication.

 2. CrowdStrike – July 19, 2024

On July 19, CrowdStrike experienced a substantial service outage due to a failed routine software update. The backlash was overwhelming, receiving nearly 5 million user reports. This incident pointed out the crucial role cybersecurity companies play in maintaining operational continuity across various sectors, including emergency services and airlines.

3. AT&T – March 5, 2024

Coinciding with the Facebook incident, AT&T suffered a significant service disruption caused by an equipment configuration error. The outage left customers without service for over 12 hours, resulting in more than 3.4 million reports. The event underscored the interconnectedness of major digital services and telecommunications.

 4. WhatsApp – April 3, 2024

WhatsApp users in Europe faced a troublesome two-hour outage on April 3, impacting around 1.1 million users. Given that WhatsApp serves as a primary communication tool in many regions, the outage highlighted the critical nature of reliable messaging services in everyday communications, particularly during emergencies.

 5. Microsoft 365 – June 26, 2024

Microsoft 365 was hit by significant service outages on June 26, with 168,000 user reports emerging, predominantly from the Asia-Pacific region. Japan experienced the brunt of the disruption, with over 139,000 reports. This incident emphasized the increasing reliance on cloud-based services for business operations and productivity.

 6. 1&1 – May 2024

A late May outage at the German telecom operator 1&1 drew substantial attention, with over 218,000 user reports. The incident highlighted the vulnerabilities local telecom operators face amid rising demands for connectivity, raising questions about infrastructure resilience.

 7. Deutsche Telekom – May 2024

Following closely on the heels of the 1&1 outage, Deutsche Telekom experienced its own issues, affecting more than 209,000 users in Germany. The multiple outages within a short span reflected the challenges telecom companies encounter in ensuring consistent service reliability.

 8. PayPay – May 2024

The Japanese payment system PayPay faced an outage in May that disrupted services for over 76,000 users, casting doubt on the resilience of digital payment systems that have surged in popularity and usage in recent years.

 9. Bait (Mexico) – April 2, 2024

Bait, a mobile virtual network operator under Walmart in Mexico, encountered significant service disruptions on April 2, leading to nearly 99,000 user reports. This incident illustrated that even smaller operators could face severe outages amid the increasing demands for connectivity.

 10. Telkom (South Africa) – May 13, 2024

In Africa, Telkom suffered an outage on May 13, with around 55,000 user reports filed. This issue was part of a broader trend where local telecom service providers faced similar problems, reinforcing the importance of stable digital infrastructure.

The internet outages in 2024 serve as a crucial reminder of our growing dependence on digital services. Major incidents affecting platforms like Facebook, Microsoft, and regional telecoms highlighted not only the vulnerabilities within our digital infrastructures but also the urgent need for robust contingency planning. As technology continues to integrate deeper into our lives, ensuring the reliability and resilience of these services will be paramount for both individuals and organizations. Moving forward, the lessons learned in 2024 will play a vital role in shaping strategies to mitigate future risks related to internet outages.
