The Telangana Media Academy has taken a significant step forward in modernizing journalism education by organizing the state’s first structured AI workshop for journalists, marking a crucial milestone in the integration of artificial intelligence tools in regional media practices.
The workshop, titled “Artificial Intelligence (AI): Tools & Techniques,” was conducted on September 3, 2025, at the Telangana Media Academy auditorium in Nampally, organized in collaboration with ADIRA Data Leads. The event attracted over 100 journalists from prominent Telugu, English, and Urdu newspapers and television channels, representing the diverse linguistic media landscape of Telangana.
Media Academy Chairman K. Srinivas Reddy inaugurated the session, emphasizing that AI is fundamentally transforming newsroom practices across the journalism industry. He stressed that journalists must adapt to this evolving technological environment by acquiring essential AI skills to remain competitive and effective in their profession.
The comprehensive training session was conducted by Udumula Sudhakar Reddy, a senior journalist and Editor (Investigation) at The Times of India, Hyderabad. With over 27 years of journalism experience, multiple international fellowships, and recognition as a Google News Initiative fact-check trainer, Sudhakar brings exceptional credentials to AI training for journalists.
Sudhakar emphasized a crucial reality facing the journalism profession: “Journalism has now entered the era of agentic AI, where understanding the technology has become essential, but the risks are equally significant”. He positioned himself as a perpetual learner, noting that he continuously updates his AI knowledge daily in his professional work, demonstrating the importance of ongoing education in this rapidly evolving field.
The workshop provided hands-on experience with cutting-edge AI tools specifically relevant to journalism practice. Sudhakar demonstrated practical applications of major platforms including ChatGPT, Perplexity, Notebook LM, Google Gemini, Midjourney, Sora, and VEO3. Through PowerPoint presentations and live examples, participants learned how these tools can be effectively integrated into reporting workflows, content creation, and multimedia journalism.
The training covered multiple dimensions of AI application in journalism, from text generation and fact-checking to visual content creation and data analysis. This comprehensive approach ensures journalists can leverage AI across various aspects of their professional responsibilities.
A significant portion of the workshop addressed the ethical challenges and potential dangers associated with AI implementation in journalism. Sudhakar warned that AI-generated content could be misused to manipulate public opinion or spread false information, including content that might incite discrimination based on race, religion, class, or gender.
He explained that flaws in AI training data or poorly designed prompts can result in biased outputs and misinformation, making it vital for journalists to adopt AI responsibly and ethically. The training emphasized that while AI tools offer tremendous benefits for journalism, their implementation requires careful consideration of accuracy, bias prevention, and ethical standards.
The workshop addressed the broader implications of AI automation for the journalism industry. Sudhakar noted that the emergence of AI agents and increasing automation could potentially lead to job displacement in the future, highlighting the importance of journalists staying ahead of technological developments.
Chairman K. Srinivas Reddy reinforced the Media Academy’s commitment to strengthening journalists’ skills through specialized training programs, particularly in emerging technologies. He highlighted how AI can enhance digital and social media reporting capabilities, enabling faster content delivery and wider audience reach.
This workshop represents the first structured AI training program specifically designed for journalists in Telangana, establishing the state as a pioneer in technology-integrated journalism education. The initiative demonstrates the Telangana Media Academy’s proactive approach to preparing regional journalists for the digital transformation of the media industry.
The program’s success is evidenced by the strong participation from diverse media organizations and languages, indicating widespread recognition of AI training’s importance across the regional journalism community. Media Academy Secretary Nagulapalli Venkateswara Rao and other dignitaries participated in the program, demonstrating institutional support for this technological transition.
The workshop establishes a framework for ongoing AI education in journalism, with Sudhakar emphasizing that journalists must remain “perpetual students” to adapt to rapidly evolving AI technologies. This approach aligns with global trends in journalism education, where continuous learning has become essential for professional relevance and effectiveness.
The collaboration with ADiRA DataLeads provides a model for future partnerships between educational institutions and technology training organizations, ensuring journalists receive cutting-edge, practical AI education that directly applies to their professional responsibilities.
This pioneering initiative positions Telangana’s journalism community at the forefront of AI integration in regional media, setting a precedent for other states to follow in modernizing journalism education and practice through technology adoption.
