As of May 26, 2025, India is witnessing a notable increase in COVID-19 cases, with active infections climbing to 1,009 from just 257 a week prior. This spike has prompted health authorities to closely monitor the situation, particularly in states such as Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Maharashtra, where the majority of cases have been reported.
Over the past week, India has recorded an increase of 752 new COVID-19 cases. Alongside this rise, health officials reported seven deaths attributed to the virus, while 305 individuals have recovered or been discharged from treatment. A detailed breakdown of active cases reveals that:
| State | Active Cases | New Cases Since Last Week | Deaths |
| Kerala | 430 | 335 | 3 |
| Maharashtra | 209 | 153 | 4 |
| Delhi | 104 | 99 | 0 |
| Karnataka | Data not specified | Data not specified | Data not specified |
The surge in active cases has raised concerns among public health experts, especially with recent reports of new COVID-19 variants, specifically NB.1.8.1 and LF.7. These variants, identified as “Variants Under Monitoring” by the World Health Organization (WHO), have also been linked to rising infection rates in other parts of Asia, including China.
The emergence of COVID-19 variants is a constant challenge in managing the pandemic. The two variants currently monitored in India, NB.1.8.1 and LF.7, were first reported in Tamil Nadu and have shown a correlation with the recent increase in cases. However, the WHO has indicated there is currently no evidence suggesting these variants are more transmissible or cause more severe disease compared to earlier strains. This insight offers some reassurance, but the situation underscores the need for ongoing vigilance and public health measures.
The Union Health Ministry of India has a robust surveillance system in place, utilizing the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) and ICMR’s respiratory virus sentinel surveillance network to monitor respiratory illnesses, including COVID-19. Currently, most COVID-19 cases reported are mild and manageable under home care, although the health authorities continue to stress the importance of preventive measures, especially in states witnessing spikes in active cases.
Local governments are advised to increase testing rates, ensuring timely diagnosis and treatment. Public awareness campaigns about vaccination and safety protocols are also being emphasized to curb the spread of the virus.
