Robotics for Good Youth Challenge India: A New Dawn in AI and Robotics

In a vibrant display of innovation and creativity, the Robotics for Good Youth Challenge was successfully held today at the prestigious Pragati Maidan on October 17, marking a significant milestone in the journey toward sustainable development and disaster response through technology. Hosted as a side event of the World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly (WTSA-24), this challenge showcased the remarkable talent of young minds from across India, all driven by a shared commitment to harness robotics for societal benefit.

The day commenced with excitement, as participating teams—composed of aspiring engineers, programmers, and roboticists—gathered for accreditation and robot homologation. With eager anticipation, the contestants demonstrated their creations, which were ingeniously crafted to tackle real-world challenges related to disaster management, aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

A Platform for Future Innovators

Tomas Lamanauskas, Deputy Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), delivered an inspiring opening address, emphasizing the importance of youth engagement in technological advancement. He stated, “The future is in your hands. Your innovations can change lives and empower communities, especially in times of crisis.” This sentiment resonated throughout the venue, igniting passion among participants and mentors alike.

The competition was structured into a series of qualifying rounds followed by elimination matches, where teams demonstrated their robots tackling simulated disaster scenarios. Their ingenuity was on full display as they navigated challenges, from search and rescue operations to delivering aid packages, showcasing both technical skills and a commitment to humanitarian goals.

Honoring Exceptional Achievements

As the day progressed, the atmosphere buzzed with excitement leading to the much-anticipated final round. The judges, comprising distinguished experts in robotics and humanitarian efforts, deliberated carefully before announcing the winners. In a nail-biting finish, the “Innovate for Change” team clinched the title in the senior category, while the “Young Visionaries” triumphed in the junior category.

Both winning teams not only earned tickets to the Grand Finale in Geneva during the AI for Good Global Summit 2025 but also received prestigious Gold Passes for all team members and mentors to enhance their networking opportunities on a global stage. They will also showcase their innovative projects in the Youth Zone exhibition booth at the summit, providing invaluable exposure to international leaders and potential partners.

The Road Ahead

The Robotics for Good Youth Challenge is part of a broader initiative to cultivate a culture of innovation and problem-solving among youth, encouraging inclusivity and sustainable practices. The event underscored the necessity of equipping young individuals with both technical know-how and vital soft skills, including teamwork, critical thinking, and project management.

As the awards ceremony drew to a close, Frederic Werner, Chief of Strategy and Operations at ITU, affirmed, “Today, you have not just competed; you have paved the way for a new generation of leaders ready to harness technology for good.”

With spirited discussions about improvements and strategies for future competitions, participants left the event with renewed energy and vision, eager to further push the boundaries of robotics and AI in addressing some of the world’s most pressing challenges.

The success of the Robotics for Good Youth Challenge marks a significant chapter in India’s journey towards becoming a hub of innovative solutions driven by young talent. As the world shifts toward more technologically advanced frameworks for disaster response, the insights and innovations from today’s event will undoubtedly leave an enduring legacy, inspiring future generations to embrace the challenges of our time.

With participants ready to take their innovations global and the support of organizations like the ITU and IHFC, the future indeed looks promising for robotics and AI, dedicated to making a difference for humanity.
