In the measured world of analytical instrumentation, a company does not survive thirty-four years by accident. It survives by solving problems that others cannot — and by building instruments so fundamentally reliable that laboratories, once they have adopted them, find it difficult to imagine working without them.
Sudheer Reddy, Product Manager and Application Specialist — Spectroscopy at Analytik Jena, arrived at the ASM 2026 technical session as a representative of exactly that kind of company. His presentation — covering Analytik Jena’s complete product portfolio from atomic spectroscopy and TOC analysis to life science and liquid automation — was one of the afternoon’s most substantive technical inputs. For Smart Labtech’s sales and technical team, it was also a master class in how to sell analytical instrumentation not as hardware, but as solutions to measurable scientific problems.
The Company — German Precision, Global Reach, Indian Presence
Sudheer, in his presentation, briefed the company’s precision, global reach and its Indian presence. According to him, Analytik Jena was founded in 1991 in the city of Jena, Germany — a city with a centuries-old tradition in precision optics and analytical science. Over the subsequent three decades, the company evolved from a specialist analytical instrument maker into a comprehensive solutions provider. In 2013, it was acquired by Endress+Hauser — the Swiss process automation and measurement technology group — which gave Analytik Jena both global financial stability and access to a complementary ecosystem of process-side measurement solutions.
Today, Analytik Jena operates through twelve subsidiaries worldwide. India is among them — with its direct operations established in 2013, a current laboratory in Delhi, and a new combined facility with Endress+Hauser in Mumbai imminent. All manufacturing, Sudheer Reddy was careful to emphasise, happens in Germany — in Jena (elemental analysis, molecular spectroscopy), Göttingen (Biometra PCRs), and Ilmenau (combustion elemental analysis and TOC analysis) — maintaining the strict quality protocols that define the brand’s global reputation.
The product portfolio spans three broad domains: chemical analysis, life science, and liquid handling and automation. For Smart Labtech’s predominantly pharmaceutical and research customer base, every one of these domains holds direct commercial relevance.
Chemical Analysis — The Core Portfolio
Elemental Analysis: AAS, ICP-OES, ICP-MS
Analytik Jena’s atomic spectroscopy range covers the full spectrum of elemental analysis applications — from cost-sensitive routine laboratory work to the most demanding trace-level and speciation analyses.
The AAS range comprises three models distinguished by background correction technology and application breadth. The novAA 800 uses deuterium lamp background correction and is available as flame-only or flame-plus-graphite configuration. The Zeenit series employs the more sophisticated Zeeman background correction with a tandem flame-furnace design — allowing both flame and furnace analyses without manual reconfiguration. The contrAA 800 is Analytik Jena’s proprietary flagship: a single xenon arc lamp replaces the multiple hollow cathode lamps required by traditional AAS instruments, providing wavelength coverage from 185 to 900 nanometres. Five elements can be analysed sequentially in a single method — a throughput advantage that conventional AAS systems cannot match.
The ICP-OES range — led by the PlasmaQuant 9200 — addresses multi-element analysis requirements in pharmaceutical, environmental, chemical, and materials laboratories. The ICP-MS range, including the PlasmaQuant MS series, is configurable for speciation analysis through coupling with LC or IC systems. A dedicated auto sampler for clinical diagnostics — capable of handling blood, serum, and urine samples with barcode reader integration and automated mixing — addresses a segment where, Sudheer noted, fully automated clinical AAS analysis is currently unique to Analytik Jena globally.
Combustion Elemental Analysis: Carbon, Sulphur, Nitrogen, Halogens
The multi EA series covers combustion-based analysis of carbon, sulphur, nitrogen, chlorine, and halogen groups across liquid, solid, and gas sample matrices. The modular architecture allows customers to begin with a furnace unit and a single detector, then upgrade to additional element detectors as analytical requirements evolve. The multi EA 4000 is dedicated to solid sample matrices — soil, bitumen, coal — in a horizontal furnace configuration. For AOX (adsorbable organic halides) analysis, the APOC automated pre-treatment module significantly reduces the lengthy manual sample preparation otherwise required.
UV-Vis Spectrophotometry: SPECORD Plus Series
The SPECORD Plus series spans four models from the split-beam 50 to the dual-beam, dual-monochromator, variable-bandwidth 250 Plus. For pharmaceutical laboratories requiring broad application coverage with variable bandwidth, the 210 Plus represents the practical optimum. The 250 Plus is positioned for research-grade work requiring maximum spectral resolution.
The Star of the Session — TOC Analysis and the multi NC 4300 UV
If Sudheer Reddy’s presentation had a centrepiece, it was unambiguously the multi NC 4300 UV — Analytik Jena’s UV wet oxidation TOC analyser, and the product that both the presenter and Smart Labtech’s MD identified as the most commercially promising in the current Indian pharmaceutical market.
Total Organic Carbon analysis is not an optional extra for pharmaceutical laboratories. It is a regulatory requirement — demanded by pharmacopoeias for water for injection testing, cleaning validation, and purified water quality control. Every pharmaceutical company has TOC as a need. The question is not whether to buy — it is which system to buy.
The multi NC 4300 UV answers that question with a technology that no other manufacturer currently offers at equivalent cost: UV wet oxidation.
Instead of burning the sample in a high-temperature combustion tube with a platinum catalyst — as conventional TOC analysers do — the 4300 UV uses UV light at 185 nm and 254 nm to oxidise organic carbon to CO2 at ambient temperature. The detection is performed by Analytik Jena’s patented Focus Radiation NDIR detector — a technology so distinctive that a brief video demonstration during the session made the audience pause.
The conventional NDIR detector uses a polished metal surface to reflect infrared radiation toward the sensor. Over time, acids used in NPOC sample pre-treatment corrode that reflective coating — degrading detector performance and eventually requiring costly detector replacement. Rotating chopper wheels — the mechanical beam-interruption components in conventional NDIR detectors — are another point of failure. The Focus Radiation NDIR detector eliminates both vulnerabilities: parallel IR beams are focused by integrated optics directly onto a single sensor point through a highly resistant glass cuvette. No reflective metal surface. No rotating mechanical parts. No corrosion. No degradation.
The result: a five-year standard warranty on the detector assembly — regardless of the warranty period purchased for the rest of the system. “Even if a customer purchases for one year standard warranty, the warranty on the detector, furnace, and UV lamp comes as standard,” Sudheer Reddy confirmed.
Additional advantages of the 4300 UV:
Detection limits as low as 1 ppb — meeting even the most stringent pharmacopoeial requirements for water for injection. Analysis time of 2–3 minutes per sample — compared to up to 5 minutes for combustion-based systems. No combustion tube, no catalyst — eliminating the most expensive recurring consumable costs of conventional TOC analysers. Beta Flow Management System — a proprietary mass flow meter positioned just before the detector that continuously verifies gas flow integrity, issuing a leakage warning before analysis commences rather than after. An invaluable compliance safeguard in pharmaceutical environments. EZ-Cal function — calibration from a single stock solution, with the system diluting to all required calibration points automatically. The calibration curve, once established, remains valid for up to one year with daily factor checks — reducing analyst time and the risk of manual dilution error. 21 CFR Part 11 compliance — standard on the pharmaceutical model, addressing the regulatory requirements of US FDA and equivalent bodies.
Sudheer Reddy’s commercial counsel was pointed: in the Indian pharmaceutical market, Shimadzu is the primary competition in TOC. Shimadzu consistently promotes combustion-based TOC. “If you pitch UV technology first,” he advised the Smart Labtech team, “and impress upon the customer the advantages of UV methodology, the customer will begin asking Shimadzu for a UV-based system too — and Shimadzu’s UV offering is priced significantly higher than ours. You have converted the conversation to your advantage before the competition has begun.”
Life Science — PCR, qPCR, and Liquid Automation
Analytik Jena’s life science portfolio, through the Biometra brand, covers traditional PCR thermal cyclers and real-time qPCR systems manufactured in Göttingen. For Smart Labtech’s growing focus on biotechnology and academic research customers, these instruments represent a natural extension of the existing conversation.
The more commercially immediate opportunity — and the one Sri Satya specifically endorsed during the discussion — is liquid handling and automation. Analytik Jena’s CyBio FeliX is a fully configurable automated liquid handler for high-throughput applications — multi-solvent extraction, 96-well plate processing, and complete workflow automation integrating liquid handling, PCRs, and robotic systems. For simpler applications, the CyBio Selma offers automated aspiration and dispensing without the complexity of the full FeliX configuration.
“Labs are getting automated. Manpower is being reduced. Pipetting, diluting, dispensing — through automatic liquid dispensing,” the MD noted during the discussion. “It is a common tool — like a pH meter or a balance — but one that opens the conversation because customers are genuinely interested. If you are discussing liquid automation with a customer and showing some technical depth, you will build rapport that a product catalogue never achieves.”
The Strategy — What Smart Labtech Should Lead With

The session’s closing discussion — involving both Sudheer Reddy and Smart Labtech’s MD — crystallised into a clear commercial strategy for Smart Labtech’s Analytik Jena portfolio:
Lead with TOC. Every pharmaceutical company needs it. The 4300 UV has a unique technology story. Shimadzu, the primary competitor, is vulnerable on both price and technology when UV oxidation is the benchmark. The conversation starts with a product the customer already wants to buy.
Add liquid automation as a second entry point. It opens doors, builds rapport, and positions Smart Labtech as a partner in laboratory modernisation — not just a hardware supplier.
Build towards AAS and ICP. These are longer conversations requiring deeper technical preparation — but in academic and research institutions, AAS remains a core requirement. The contrAA 800’s xenon lamp technology removes the per-element lamp purchase burden entirely, a powerful differentiator in cost-conscious institutional budgets.
Target Karnataka deliberately. Sudheer Reddy is based in Bengaluru and manages sales for the Karnataka region directly. Smart Labtech’s Bengaluru office, he noted, now has an excellent reference for Analytik Jena products in the pharma segment. That reference must be activated.
A Partnership Still Finding Its Footing — And Its Potential
Smart Labtech’s relationship with Analytik Jena is, by both parties’ acknowledgment, a partnership in its building phase — one with episodes of alignment and misalignment, but one built on a product portfolio of genuine merit and a market that is structurally hungry for what Analytik Jena offers.
“TOC is an essential requirement instrument. Without TOC, no pharmaceutical company exists,” the MD said plainly. “And only one company is your real competition. That is a very rare and very fortunate position to be in.”
The opportunity is clear. The strategy is defined. The instrument is technically superior. The task now — as with every Analytik Jena inquiry in the pipeline — is to close the gap between the prospect and the order.
Focus Radiation. Five-year warranty. One ppb detection.
These are not marketing claims. They are engineering facts. And in the pharmaceutical laboratories of India, engineering facts sell instruments.
