Seven instances of the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), a respiratory virus that recently attracted attention following an epidemic in China, have been reported from India. According to the Center, “there is no reason to panic” because the HMPV is already “circulated” throughout the world.

There have been two new HMPV cases reported from Nagpur, Maharashtra. Details were made public by a private lab. Samples have been gathered and forwarded to the virology department of AIIMS. After recovering, both patients were released from the hospital.
Bengaluru, Karnataka, announced the first two HMPV cases in India yesterday. Among them are an eight-month-old who is recuperating at a hospital and a three-month-old who has been released from the hospital. After being admitted to Baptist Hospital with a history of bronchopneumonia, an eight-month-old kid tested positive for HMPV.
In Ahmedabad, a two-month-old baby was verified to be the third HMPV case in India. According to Dr. Nirav Patel, a doctor at the Orange Children Hospital in Ahmedabad, “the infant is completely fine at this point and is prepared for discharge.” The baby was brought to the hospital on December 24 with signs of a cold, cough, and trouble breathing, according to Dr. Patel.
Two HMPV instances were reported by Tamil Nadu, one in Salem and one in Chennai. In India, no HMPV-related fatalities have been documented to date. The leading medical organization, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), emphasized that the HMPV is already “circulating” throughout the world, including in India. Additionally, it stated that the nation is not experiencing an abnormal increase in instances of Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI) or Influenza-Like Illness (ILI). It stated, “India is prepared to manage any possible rise in respiratory ailments.”
According to the Union health ministry, the afflicted newborns and their families in Bengaluru and Ahmedabad had no recent travel history, ruling out exposure from other areas or nations. A remark regarding the Tamil Nadu cases was not immediately available. A well-known respiratory virus, the HMPV has attracted attention following reports of an epidemic in China.
According to medical professionals, HMPV is not a novel virus. Following reports of the virus in India, Union Health Minister JP Nadda stated, “It was initially detected in 2001. People of all ages can be impacted by HMPV, which spreads through the atmosphere. In a video statement, he said, “There is no reason to fear, and the government is closely monitoring the situation. The virus spreads more throughout the winter and early spring months.”
Dr. Soumya Swaminathan, a former chief scientist of the World Health Organization, stated that there is no need to be alarmed about HMPV. In a post on X, she stated, “It is a recognized virus that causes respiratory illnesses, mainly minor.” During a cold, Dr. Swaminathan advised people to take “standard measures” such as wearing a mask, washing their hands, avoiding crowds, and seeing a doctor if their symptoms were severe.
China’s HMPV outbreak sparked international health worries, and nations kept a careful eye on the issue. Concerns have been raised by images and videos of patients wearing masks at Chinese hospitals that have surfaced on social media.
Beijing said in a press release that it was an annual winter occurrence and addressed health concerns. “Winter is when respiratory diseases tend to peak,” stated Mao Ning, a spokesman for China’s foreign ministry.
HMPV can cause upper and lower respiratory disease in persons of all ages, but it is particularly common in young children, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. HMPV can spread from one person to another or from one surface to another. The following symptoms are frequently linked to HMPV: cough, fever, congestion of the nose, and dyspnea. According to the CDC, the clinical signs of an HMPV infection are comparable to those of other viruses that cause upper and lower respiratory infections and can develop into bronchitis or pneumonia.
