The first suspected death in Maharashtra from Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) occurred in Pune, where a patient passed away after developing the illness. He died in the Solapur district of Maharashtra while on a personal visit to his hometown. In the meantime, Pune has now reported more than 100 GBS cases.
The deceased was admitted to a private hospital in Solapur on January 18 due to symptoms of a cold, cough, and breathing difficulties. After demonstrating improvement, he was moved from the intensive care unit to a regular room. But after experiencing breathing problems, his health began to deteriorate, and he eventually died in the hospital’s intensive care unit after being readmitted. Before his death, the deceased also suffered from limb paralysis.
A 40-year-old patient was brought to us for a post-mortem after passing away at a private hospital. The preliminary assessment suggests that Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) was the cause of the patient’s death, according to Dr. Sanjeev Thakur, dean of Government Medical College in Solapur.
He had suspected GBS, so I looked up his clinical history. He has passed away even though he has been receiving therapy for five days. We chose to undertake clinical PM in addition to medical PM. The purpose of clinical PM is to determine the precise cause of death. The autopsy was performed by a team of four, including two biologists and a pathologist. GBS is the primary cause of death, according to the autopsy and clinical reports,” he continued.
Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and blood samples have been sent for polymerase chain reaction analysis in order to further validate this. When the results of the microbiological and histopathology tests are released, we will know the precise cause. The report will not arrive for five or six days.
“There were 101 GBS cases in Pune overall on Sunday, including 68 males and 33 females. 16 of these individuals are dependent on a ventilator. In Solapur, there has been one recorded suspected fatality, according to a State health department official.
In the meantime, the Pune Municipal Corporation’s health department and the Rapid Response Team (RRT) kept an eye on the impacted Sinhgad Road districts.
According to the official, a total of 25,578 homes have been surveyed thus far, with 15,761 located within the boundaries of the Pune Municipal Corporation, 3,719 within the boundaries of the Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, and 6,098 inside the rural parts of the district.
