India’s First eVTOL Aircraft Prototype Takes Off in Chennai

India has entered the global race for advanced air mobility with the unveiling of the country’s first full-scale electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft prototype. The aircraft, named the e200X (PT-01), was revealed earlier this month by The ePlane Company, a Chennai-headquartered deep-tech startup incubated at IIT Madras, marking what the company describes as the transition of its programme “from sub-scale into a 2.2-tonne full-scale reality.”

An eVTOL is a battery-powered aircraft designed to take off and land vertically like a helicopter before transitioning into forward flight like a conventional aeroplane. Unlike helicopters, which depend on one or two large fuel-powered rotors, eVTOLs use multiple electrically driven propellers in a distributed propulsion configuration. This design is expected to lower noise levels, improve energy efficiency, and provide built-in redundancy, allowing the aircraft to keep flying safely even if a single motor fails. Because eVTOLs do not need long runways, they can operate from compact vertiports, making them suited to airport transfers, emergency medical evacuation, and short intra-city hops above congested road traffic.

The PT-01 prototype represents the culmination of nearly five years of research and development, spanning computational modelling and a series of progressively larger flying demonstrators. It was unveiled at the company’s newly inaugurated 60,000-square-foot integrated prototyping and testing facility on the IIT Madras Discovery Campus in Thaiyur, Chennai, a facility opened by IIT Madras Director Prof. V. Kamakoti. The site is intended to bring aircraft design, subsystem integration, and testing activities under one roof as the company pushes toward certification.

According to the company, the aircraft has entered structured ground testing ahead of flight trials, and is expected to first undergo unmanned test flights before advancing to piloted trials as part of its certification programme. Built around a carbon-fibre composite airframe, the prototype is reported to offer a range of roughly 110 kilometres on a single charge. The ePlane Company has said it aims to begin commercial operations by 2028, with air ambulance services planned as the first application before the technology is expanded into passenger air-taxi operations. In February 2025, the International Critical Air Transfer Team (ICATT) had already signed an agreement with the company to procure 788 eVTOL air ambulances, underscoring early demand for the emergency-medicine use case.

The development places India alongside the United States, Europe, and China in the increasingly competitive push to commercialise eVTOL technology, an area widely regarded within the aviation industry as central to what is termed Advanced Air Mobility (AAM). For a country that has historically been a consumer rather than a producer of aviation technology, the emergence of an indigenously developed, full-scale eVTOL prototype is being read as a signal of growing domestic capability in electric aviation, powered in part by government initiatives such as Startup India and Make in India. Significant engineering and regulatory milestones remain before commercial passenger services can begin, including extended flight testing, airworthiness certification, and the build-out of ground infrastructure such as vertiports, but the unveiling of the PT-01 establishes a tangible starting point for that longer journey.
