India Surpasses 90 GW of Installed Solar Capacity

Acceleration in Renewable Energy Growth

In a significant milestone for India’s renewable energy sector, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) recently reported that the country’s installed renewable energy capacity has exceeded 201 GW by the end of September 2024. A substantial portion of this capacity, totalling 90.76 GW, stems from solar projects, showcasing India’s increasing focus on sustainable energy sources.

Solar power has emerged as a key contributor to India’s renewable energy landscape, with cumulative solar installations reaching 90.76 GW during the same period. This includes a diverse mix of projects, such as 70.05 GW from ground-mounted installations, 14.3 GW from grid-connected rooftop photovoltaic (PV) systems, 2.63 GW from hybrid projects, and 3.78 GW from off-grid solar systems.

Among the states leading the charge in solar energy adoption, Rajasthan stands out with an impressive 24.2 GW of installed PV capacity, closely followed by Gujarat with 15.1 GW and Tamil Nadu with 9.3 GW. These states’ commitment to solar energy reflects India’s decentralized approach to renewable energy deployment, leveraging regional strengths and resources for sustainable power generation.

The momentum in solar installations is further evidenced by India’s addition of 8.9 GW of solar capacity in the first half of fiscal year 2025, signalling continued growth in the solar energy sector. This expansion aligns with the country’s broader renewable energy targets and commitment to reducing carbon emissions through clean energy sources.

In the broader context of India’s renewable energy mix, solar power plays a pivotal role alongside wind, hydro, and bioenergy sources. With 90.76 GW from solar, 47.36 GW from wind, 46.93 GW from large hydro, 5.08 GW from small hydro, and 11.33 GW from bioenergy, India’s diverse renewable energy portfolio highlights the nation’s commitment to a sustainable and environmentally conscious energy future.

The achievement of surpassing 90 GW of installed solar capacity underscores India’s ongoing transition towards a greener and more sustainable energy landscape. As the country continues to prioritize renewable energy development, such milestones set the stage for further growth, increased energy security, and a reduced carbon footprint, contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable future for all.
