India is experiencing a significant rise in COVID-19 cases, prompting the Union Health Ministry to take precautions. Officials are urging people to avoid crowded places, especially if they are feeling unwell, and to maintain good hand hygiene.
In the past 24 hours, India reported 4,302 COVID-19 cases, with an increase of 864 cases, according to health authorities. Most cases have been mild and managed at home, but there is a renewed focus on monitoring the situation closely.
Dr. Sunita Sharma, the Director General of Health Services, chaired technical review meetings earlier this week with various health representatives, including those from the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). They discussed the current COVID-19 situation and emergency preparedness.
To ensure public safety, authorities are increasing surveillance for conditions related to COVID-19, such as Influenza Like Illness (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI). Testing is recommended for all admitted SARI cases and 5% of ILI cases. Positive samples from SARI cases will be sent for genome sequencing to identify any new variants.
Since January 1, 44 deaths have been reported, primarily among individuals with pre-existing health conditions. In response to the recent surge, the Union Health Ministry has instructed state governments to ensure the availability of resources like oxygen, isolation beds, ventilators, and essential medicines.
Mock drills have been conducted to assess oxygen supply systems in hospitals, with more facility-level preparedness drills planned for June 4 and 5 to ensure everything is ready to handle a potential increase in cases.
Individuals experiencing respiratory symptoms are advised to self-monitor their health and seek medical care if their conditions worsen.
As the situation evolves, the Health Ministry will continue to monitor the COVID-19 landscape and implement necessary measures to safeguard public health.
