Impact of Air Pollution on Solar Energy Generation in India | Neo Science Hub

India is blessed with abundant sunlight, averaging around 300 sunny days a year. However, recent studies indicate that the quality of this sunlight is significantly declining due to rising air pollution levels. This environmental challenge poses a severe threat to the future of solar energy generation in the country, which has ambitious goals for renewable energy expansion.

Key Findings

A study conducted by researchers at IIT Delhi, published in Environmental Research Letters in November 2024, highlights the adverse effects of air pollution and climate change on the efficiency of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems in India.

1. Solar Power Targets: India aims to produce 50% of its electricity from non-fossil fuel sources by 2030, intending to install 500 GW of renewable energy capacity, of which a significant portion will come from solar energy.

2. Quality of Solar Radiation: Despite having numerous sunny days, the quality of solar radiation reaching the Earth is deteriorating. Factors such as aerosol levels, clouds, and particulate matter are causing a phenomenon termed “global dimming,” which significantly reduces solar radiation.

3. Impact on Energy Generation: The models used in the study predict a reduction in the efficiency of solar panels by approximately 2.3% by the mid-century. This is attributed to both air pollution, which obstructs solar radiation, and rising ambient temperatures from climate change.

4. Long-term Projections: The study analyzed data from 1985 to 2014 to forecast changes in solar radiation and efficiency from 2041 to 2050, which aligns with the operational lifetime of many solar installations.

Scenarios Examined

The researchers examined two scenarios concerning atmospheric health:

– Moderate Efforts: In this scenario, there are moderate attempts to control air quality and mitigate climate change effects, resulting in significant losses in solar energy generation.

– Strong Pollution Controls: This scenario presents a stronger focus on air pollution controls while allowing for weaker climate change efforts, which still leads to considerable efficiency losses but less than in the first scenario.

Recommendations

To improve solar energy efficiency and ensure sustainable growth in the renewable energy sector, the study put forth several recommendations:

– Mitigation Strategies: There is an urgent need to develop strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, which would concurrently improve air quality and facilitate better solar energy generation.

– Investment in Technology: Innovation in photovoltaic cell design is critical. Improved technologies can enhance the resilience of solar power generation against environmental stressors.

– Policy Implementation: Effective implementation of current environmental policies is essential to curb pollution and promote renewable energy.

– Community Engagement: Public participation is necessary for spreading awareness and facilitating actions such as tree planting and the adoption of electric vehicles, which can help in reducing fossil fuel consumption.
