ICMR Study Reveals Early Newborn Screening Reduces Sickle Cell Anaemia Mortality | Neo Science Hub

A recent study conducted by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) highlights the critical importance of newborn screening for sickle cell disease (SCD). This research indicates that early diagnosis and treatment can significantly reduce mortality rates for affected infants. Over a span of five years, the study tested approximately 63,536 newborns in high-prevalence areas of India, enabling researchers to monitor the disease’s impact and the effectiveness of early interventions. It was found that with timely diagnosis, mortality rates for sickle cell disease can be decreased from a troubling range of 20-30% to less than 5%.

The study, which took place between 2019 and 2024, involved collaboration from various centres across India, including significant participation from tribal regions where the disease is more commonly found. Early detection of sickle cell disease facilitates proactive treatment, allowing healthcare providers to administer preventive antibiotics and vaccines. For instance, infants can receive penicillin to guard against infections and undergo regular checkups that are vital for managing their health.

Moreover, families are provided with essential genetic counselling, which not only prepares them for the challenges of raising a child with the disease but also educates them on potential future risks. Out of the cohort tested, a notable percentage—11.4%—were found to be carriers of the sickle cell gene, and 0.9% were diagnosed with SCD. The follow-up for these diagnosed infants included comprehensive care, comprising treatments such as hydroxyurea therapy and folic acid supplementation, dramatically improving their prospects for a healthier life.

The study underscores the significance of implementing newborn screening programs, especially in regions with a high prevalence of sickle cell disease. It demonstrates that when healthcare systems adopt such proactive measures, they can drastically reduce early childhood mortality and improve the overall quality of life for these patients. The ICMR advocates for enhancing awareness and resources associated with newborn screening to avert the dire consequences associated with undetected sickle cell disease in the future. This initiative serves as a life-saving strategy that could prevent numerous deaths and support families in navigating the complexities of managing sickle cell disease.
