As temperatures in Hyderabad dip with the onset of severe winter; authorities at Nehru Zoological Park have implemented measures to shield animals and birds from the cold. With temperatures at the zoo generally lower than other parts of the city due to its dense greenery and proximity to Mir Alam Tank, extra precautions are being taken to ensure the safety and well-being of its inhabitants.
According to the Zoo officials have introduced room heaters in the night shelters of large carnivores, including tigers, lions, leopards, and cheetahs, as well as for primates like baboons, chimpanzees, and lion-tailed macaques. “These arrangements are aimed at maintaining a warm environment for the animals during the chilly nights,” said zoo officials.
To further combat the cold, gunny bags have been used to insulate night shelters wherever needed. Wooden planks have been placed on the floors of some enclosures to protect the animals from the cold ground.
Reptile enclosures have been prepared with dry leaves, bulbs, and small pots to provide warmth, while aviaries have been covered with green cloth to shield the birds from harsh winds. Special nest boxes have been set up for macaws, cockatoos, and other weather-sensitive birds.
For smaller monkeys, wooden boxes lined with dry paddy straw and room heaters are used to create a comfortable sleeping environment. At the mouse deer breeding center, green cloth covers the outer area, and dry paddy straw is provided inside to ensure warmth.
In addition to keeping the animals warm, the zoo authorities are taking steps to prevent seasonal illnesses that could affect the wildlife. They are monitoring the animals closely and providing additional care where required.
The comprehensive winter care strategy reflects the zoo’s commitment to the well-being of its diverse range of animals and birds. By adapting enclosures and providing extra warmth, the Nehru Zoological Park ensures that its residents are comfortable and healthy throughout the winter season.
