With summer vacations driving children to swimming pools across Hyderabad, eye specialists have issued an urgent advisory on protecting young eyes from chlorine-related damage and infections.
Paediatric ophthalmologists at major hospitals report a sharp rise in cases of red eyes, irritation, and conjunctivitis among children frequenting public and private pools. Doctors recommend mandatory use of swim goggles and pre-swim eye drops to safeguard vision.
Rising Pool-Related Eye Risks
Chlorinated water, essential for pool hygiene, strips the eye’s natural tear film, causing dryness and inflammation. Unhygienic pools harbour bacteria like Acanthamoeba, leading to severe keratitis in vulnerable children.
“Children rub their eyes instinctively, worsening exposure. We’ve treated over 50 cases this season alone, with symptoms lasting up to two weeks,” said Dr. K. Srinivas, Senior Consultant at L.V. Prasad Eye Institute.
Public pools in areas like Secunderabad, Kukatpally, and Banjara Hills see heavy summer crowds, amplifying risks. Private club pools often maintain better standards, but lapses persist.
Preventive Measures Stressed
Experts prescribe a three-step protocol:
- Goggles compulsory: Properly fitted, anti-fog swim goggles for all sessions.
- Pre-swim rinse: Saline drops 10 minutes before entering water.
- Post-swim care: Fresh water wash, avoiding eye rubbing; antibiotic drops if needed.
Parents must ensure pool water pH stays between 7.2-7.8. “Avoid pools with cloudy water or strong chemical smells,” advised Dr. Anjali Gupta, Paediatric Ophthalmologist at Rainbow Children’s Hospital.
Schools and coaching centres organising summer camps have been urged to enforce these norms. The Telangana State Swimming Association plans awareness workshops.
Vulnerable Age Group
Children aged 5-12 face highest risks due to longer playtime and weaker immunity. Contact lens use in pools draws particular caution, with doctors warning of microbial keratitis.
A parent from Gachibowli shared: “My son developed corneal abrasion after a school pool day. Goggles are non-negotiable now.”
Broader Summer Health Alert
This advisory aligns with the State’s heat action plan, addressing multiple summer hazards. Ophthalmic societies call for regular pool inspections by municipal authorities.
As Hyderabad’s pools buzz with young swimmers, simple precautions promise safer summer fun without compromising eye health.
