Future of Energy: India's Nuclear Ambitions | Neo Science Hub

India is poised to become a key player in the global energy landscape with its ambitious goal of developing 100 GW of nuclear energy by 2047. This commitment reflects not only a response to the country’s growing energy demands but also aligns with the global transition towards cleaner, more sustainable energy sources. Central to this vision is the implementation of strategic initiatives, including an emphasis on Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), which cater to both energy efficiency and safety.

The Union government has set an ambitious target to increase its nuclear energy generation capacity to 100 GW by the year 2047, the Union Budget for the fiscal year (FY) 2025-26 presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to Lok Sabha on Saturday (1st Feb, 2025) asserted. This initiative is part of the broader vision outlined in the country’s Energy Policy, aiming to diversify energy sources and enhance energy security while reducing greenhouse gas emissions. With a current nuclear power generation capacity of around 7 GW, the commitment to expand this to 100 GW signifies a significant leap and showcases India’s dedication to developing a robust nuclear energy infrastructure.

Strategic Initiatives in Nuclear Development

  1. Focus on Small Modular Reactors (SMRs):
    One of the cornerstone initiatives in India’s nuclear strategy is the adoption of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). These advanced reactor designs offer several advantages over traditional large-scale reactors, including:
    • Flexibility and Scalability: SMRs can be deployed in smaller quantities and can be incrementally built, allowing for adjustments based on energy demand.
    • Enhanced Safety: SMRs are designed with inherent safety features that minimize the risk of accidents or radiation release, aligning with international safety standards.
    • Reduced Construction Time and Costs: The modular nature of SMRs enables quicker construction and potentially lower costs, making them a financially attractive option for expanding nuclear energy capacity.
  2. Public and Private Sector Collaboration:
    To achieve the 100 GW target, the Indian government is fostering collaborations between public and private sectors. By inviting private investment into nuclear energy projects, India aims to leverage global expertise and financing options, increasing the pace of development in the sector. This collaborative framework is expected to drive innovation and efficiency in building and operating nuclear facilities.
  3. Research and Development:
    Continued investment in research and development is crucial for advancing nuclear technologies. The government has initiated various programs aimed at improving the efficiency and sustainability of nuclear energy production. This includes investments in next-generation reactor designs and fuel cycles, which will not only enhance energy output but also promote the recycling of nuclear fuel, thereby optimizing resource utilization.

Alignment with Global Energy Transition Trends
India’s nuclear ambitions are not just a domestic strategy; they are also in line with global energy transition trends that focus on decarbonization, sustainability, and energy diversity. As countries worldwide seek to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and mitigate climate change, nuclear energy is increasingly viewed as a reliable low-carbon energy source.

  1. Commitment to Climate Goals:
    By increasing its nuclear capacity, India is making a substantial contribution towards achieving its commitments under international climate agreements, including the Paris Agreement. The transition towards nuclear energy complements renewable sources and enhances the overall stability and reliability of the energy grid.
  2. Global Cooperation in Nuclear Energy:
    India’s efforts to expand its nuclear energy base have garnered attention from international partners. Collaboration with countries like the United States, France, and Russia in nuclear technology and governance ensures that India benefits from global best practices and reinforces its position within the global nuclear community.
  3. Focus on Energy Security:
    Fostering a diverse energy mix is critical for India’s energy security. In the context of fluctuating global energy prices and geopolitical uncertainties, nuclear power provides a stable and predictable energy source, allowing the country to mitigate risks associated with energy imports and reliance on fossil fuels.

India’s commitment to developing 100 GW of nuclear energy by 2047 marks a pivotal shift in its energy strategy, positioning the country as a leader in the global energy transition. Through strategic initiatives such as promoting Small Modular Reactors, investing in research and development, and fostering collaboration between public and private sectors, India is set to harness the potential of nuclear energy to meet its growing energy demands sustainably.
