
A symposium on `Emerging Trends and Technologies in the Broadcasting Sector` recently took place at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi, alongside the India Mobile Congress (IMC-2024). This event brought together over 100 national and international participants, including influential figures from the broadcasting industry, technology giants, device manufacturers, and government representatives.
The primary focus of the symposium was to explore the transformative potential and practical applications of emerging technologies within the broadcasting industry. Key topics included immersive technologies, D2M (Direct-to-Mobile), 5G broadcasting, and digital radio.
The symposium was organized into three sessions, each chaired by distinguished industry leaders and government officials. Vishal Arya, Head of Technology at Tata Play, Ashok Kumar, DDG, DoT, and Syed Tausif Abbas, DDG, DoT, were among the notable session chairs.
Session 1: Use of Immersive Technologies in Broadcasting
The first session delved into how technologies like augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and mixed reality (MR) can revolutionize content creation and consumption in broadcasting. The session showcased use cases highlighting how immersive technologies enhance viewer engagement, create richer experiences, and redefine media content delivery.
Session 2: D2M and 5G Broadcasting: Opportunities and Challenges
The second session explored the technological standards of ATSC 3.0 and 5G broadcasting based on the 3GPP standard. Discussions focused on facilitating seamless content reception on mobile handsets, potentially transforming how users access and consume media. Challenges such as infrastructure requirements, spectrum allocation, and device ecosystem were thoroughly discussed.
Session 3: Digital Radio Technology in India
The final session examined deployment strategies for digital radio in the Indian market. Experts elaborated on the advantages of digital radio, such as superior sound quality, spectrum efficiency, and multimedia service delivery. The discussions also addressed challenges and solutions for interoperability with existing analog networks to facilitate a smooth transition to digital broadcasting.
