Dr. Barnita Banerjee Named Founder Member of INSA Women Associate

Dr. Barnita Banerjee, a scientist at the National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI), has been recognized as a founder member of the Indian National Science Academy’s Women Associate (IWA) for 2025. This new initiative aims to promote diversity and inclusion in the scientific community.

The Indian National Science Academy (INSA) introduced this category to increase the representation of women in science and to support their contributions in various fields. Dr. Banerjee’s selection highlights her significant work and commitment toward mentorship and collaboration within the scientific community.

Dr. Banerjee completed her PhD in 2018 at NGRI, where she focused on studying ancient monsoons from the Miocene epoch, a time period spanning from 23 million to 5 million years ago. Her research has been published in multiple international journals, showcasing her expertise.

After earning her doctorate, Dr. Banerjee worked as an assistant professor at the National Institute of Technology in Rourkela before joining NGRI as a scientist in 2021. At NGRI, she explores lake sediments throughout India to build records of past cyclonic activities and tsunamis.

In 2024, Dr. Banerjee was awarded the Women’s Excellence Award for her outstanding contributions to science and her dedication to uplifting women in the field. The INSA Women Associates initiative is designed to connect talented women from various sectors, including academia, industry, research and development, NGOs, and startups, with INSA activities. This connection aims to create new opportunities and foster role models for future generations of women in science.

Through her work and leadership, Dr. Barnita Banerjee is not only making strides in her specific research area but also paving the way for greater gender equality in science.
