Celebrating Indian Women in STEM: A Legacy of Brilliance

In the spirit of International Women’s Day 2025, with its global theme “Accelerate Action” and India’s resonant call for “Viksit Bharat with Nari Shakti,” we turn our attention to the extraordinary contributions of Indian women in STEM. This year’s theme emphasizes the urgent need to break down barriers and empower women to lead the charge in building a developed and inclusive India. In this article, Rashmi Kumari of Neo Science Hub, delves into the rich history of female scientists in India, highlighting their remarkable achievements and the ongoing efforts to foster a more diverse and equitable scientific community.

This year’s International Women’s Day highlights the remarkable contributions of women in STEM fields. As we celebrate the achievements of women globally, it’s crucial to recognize the exceptional legacy of Indian women who have shattered stereotypes and excelled in science and technology. From pioneering botanists to leading aerospace engineers, these women have not only advanced scientific knowledge but also paved the way for future generations of female scientists in India.

A Historical Perspective: Women in STEM in India

Before delving into the achievements of individual scientists, it’s essential to understand the historical context of women in STEM in India. Traditionally, societal norms and expectations often limited women’s access to education and career opportunities, particularly in fields like science and technology. However, despite these challenges, women have been making significant contributions to scientific knowledge in India for centuries.

From ancient scholars like Gargi Vachaknavi, known for her philosophical debates and expertise in Vedic scriptures, to the legendary mathematician Lilavati, whose contributions to algebra and arithmetic are still celebrated today, women have long played a role in shaping India’s intellectual landscape.

In more recent history, figures like Kadambini Ganguly, one of the first Indian women to qualify as a physician, and Anandibai Gopalrao Joshi, the first Indian woman to obtain a medical degree in the Western hemisphere, paved the way for women in medicine. These pioneers challenged societal norms and demonstrated the capabilities of women in scientific pursuits.

Trailblazers in Indian Science

Building upon this historical foundation, numerous Indian women have made groundbreaking discoveries and pushed the boundaries of scientific understanding in various STEM fields. Here are a few notable figures:

  • Asima Chatterjee (1917-2006): A renowned organic chemist, Dr. Chatterjee was the first woman to receive a Doctor of Science degree from an Indian university. Her research focused on medicinal chemistry, particularly the development of anti-epileptic and anti-malarial drugs. She was also the first woman to be elected General President of the Indian Science Congress. Dr. Chatterjee’s dedication to science was evident in her commitment to research even amidst personal tragedy. After losing her father and husband within a short period, she suffered a heart attack but eventually found the strength to continue her scientific pursuits.
  • Anandibai Gopalrao Joshi (1865-1887): Dr. Joshi was the first Indian woman to obtain a medical degree in the Western hemisphere. She graduated from the Women’s Medical College of Pennsylvania in 1885. Her journey into medicine was driven by personal tragedy—the loss of her infant son due to a lack of medical care. Dr. Joshi faced numerous challenges in pursuing her medical education in the United States, including societal disapproval and personal health issues.
  • Edavaleth Kakkat Janaki Ammal (1897-1984): A pioneering botanist and cytogeneticist, Dr. Ammal is renowned for her work on plant breeding, particularly sugarcane and eggplant. She also made significant contributions to the study of chromosomes and co-authored the Chromosome Atlas of Cultivated Plants.
  • Kamala Sohonie (1912-1998): Dr. Sohonie was the first Indian woman to receive a PhD in a scientific field. Despite facing initial resistance due to her gender, she went on to make significant contributions to biochemistry, particularly in the study of enzymes. Dr. Sohonie’s determination paved the way for other women to pursue research opportunities at the Indian Institute of Science.
  • Rajeshwari Chatterjee (1922-2010): The first woman engineer from Karnataka, Dr. Chatterjee was instrumental in establishing a microwave research laboratory at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore. Her work paved the way for advancements in microwave engineering in India.
  • Anna Mani (1918-2001): A renowned physicist and meteorologist, Dr. Mani made significant contributions to the field of meteorology. Her work led to the development of indigenous weather instruments in India, and she played a crucial role in establishing a network of meteorological stations across the country.
  • Tessy Thomas: Known as the “Missile Woman of India,” Tessy Thomas played a pivotal role in India’s ballistic missile defense program. She was the first woman scientist to head a missile project in India, making significant contributions to aerospace engineering.
  • Sunita Sarawagi: A distinguished professor at IIT Bombay, Sunita Sarawagi is celebrated for her groundbreaking research in databases and data mining. Her work focuses on extracting valuable insights from large datasets,1 revolutionizing data management systems.

These are just a few examples of the many Indian women who have made remarkable contributions to STEM. Their stories serve as an inspiration to aspiring scientists and a testament to the power of perseverance and passion for scientific inquiry. It’s noteworthy how personal tragedies, like the loss of a child in the case of Anandibai Joshi, can sometimes become a catalyst for women to pursue careers in STEM and contribute to societal well-being.
