The Deccan College of Medical Sciences (DCMS) in Hyderabad is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. Founded in 1984 by the late Sultan Salahuddin Owaisi, DCMS was created to provide medical education to students from minority communities. Owaisi started the Darus Salam Educational Trust in 1974 to help those who had limited access to quality education.
On August 7, 1984, the Bhaskar Rao government approved the establishment of DCMS, and it received recognition from the Medical Council of India. The college opened its doors on January 26, 1985, and was initially affiliated with Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences, Vijayawada, before moving under KNR University of Health Sciences, Warangal.
Over the years, DCMS has become a leading institution for medical education. It has also opened the Owaisi Hospital Research Centre in 1996, providing practical training and healthcare services. To date, over 6,000 doctors trained at DCMS are now working worldwide, and the college admits 150 new students each year.
In addition to medicine, DCMS has branched out into other health-related fields, establishing various schools, such as the Deccan School of Hospital Management, Owaisi School and College of Nursing, Deccan School of Pharmacy, and Deccan College of Physiotherapy.
For the Quadrigenia 2025 celebrations, DCMS is hosting a four-day event that includes academic talks, cultural performances, sports, talent shows, and even medical charades. There will also be an evening dedicated to poetry and music to honor the culture of Hyderabad. A special discussion with Akbaruddin Owaisi, managing director of DCMS, and alumni doctors will take place to reflect on the college’s journey and future goals. The event will conclude with a speech by AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi and a musical performance.
