The developmental challenges of cerebral palsy requires a meticulous and adaptive approach to therapy. This case study examines the therapeutic journey of Ganesh, a young child with cerebral palsy, focusing on the innovative techniques used at the National Institute for the Empowerment of Persons with Intellectual Disabilities (NIEPID) to enhance his motor skills.
Background:
Ganesh, aged one and a half years, exhibits significant developmental delays typical of cerebral palsy. Under normal developmental timelines, crawling is a milestone typically achieved by 8 months. However, due to his condition, Ganesh faces challenges with basic motor functions such as crawling.
Therapeutic Strategy:
The therapy team at NIEPID has initiated an intensive program to aid Ganesh’s crawling abilities. The initial step involves positioning him in a quadruped stance, supporting him to manage and shift his weight. This foundational skill is crucial as it facilitates the transition to independent movement.
Implementing Tools and Techniques:
To promote effective weight shifting and enhance Ganesh’s ability to perform rocking movements—a precursor to crawling—the therapists use a round bolster. This tool helps stabilize Ganesh while encouraging the natural motions needed for crawling.
Parental Training & Home-Based Programme:
Recognizing the critical role of continuous care, NIEPID therapists not only work directly with Ganesh but also actively engage his parents in the therapeutic process. After assessing Ganesh’s specific needs and developmental status, the therapists devise a tailored home-based program. This program encompasses all necessary therapies and exercises designed to address Ganesh’s developmental hurdles.
The parents receive detailed demonstrations and training on how to effectively carry out the program at home. This ensures that Ganesh’s developmental progress continues outside the clinical setting, providing him with round-the-clock support essential for significant improvement.
Follow-Up and Progress Assessment:
On subsequent visits, Ganesh’s development is carefully evaluated to ascertain progress toward the targeted goals. The therapy team adjusts the home-based program based on these evaluations, making necessary modifications to enhance its effectiveness and address any new challenges that have arisen.
Through dedicated parental involvement and a finely tuned therapeutic regimen, Ganesh is steadily making strides toward achieving independent movement. The ultimate goal of NIEPID’s focused intervention is not just to mitigate the impacts of his disability but to integrate Ganesh into mainstream schooling without the label of his disability, thereby normalizing his educational and social experiences. This case study exemplifies the comprehensive approach taken by NIEPID to empower children like Ganesh, offering them a chance to thrive alongside their peers in a mainstream environment.
