The 4th Edition of the India Biopharma Leaders Conclave kicked off recently at Le Meridien, Hyderabad, with a focus on “New Horizons in Biopharma, Biosimilars, & Biologics.” Assistant Drugs Controller (India) Vinay Kumar Gupta delivered the opening remarks on behalf of the Chief Guest, Dr. A. Ram Kishan, Deputy Drugs Controller, CDSCO, Hyderabad.
Gupta highlighted the crucial role biosimilars and biologics play in the Indian pharmaceutical industry. He noted his involvement in the release of CDSCO’s biosimilar guidelines during his previous posting in Delhi. He commended the conclave’s focus on fostering discussions in this critical area.
Hyderabad: A Hub for Biopharma Innovation
Gupta emphasized Hyderabad’s emergence as a biopharma hub, attributing this success to supportive policies from both the central and state governments. He specifically mentioned the “plug-and-play” infrastructure established in Genome Valley, which he lauded for providing a significant boost to startups in the region.
India’s Strength in Vaccines
Gupta took pride in India’s position as the world’s largest supplier of DPT, measles, and BCG vaccines. He pointed out the presence of over 20 vaccine manufacturers in the country, with the biopharmaceutical sector experiencing consistent double-digit growth, particularly exceeding 20% growth. He emphasized India’s commitment to delivering high-quality, safe, and efficacious biopharmaceutical products.
Shifting Towards Biologics: A Brighter Future
Looking ahead, Gupta asserted that biologics represent the future of biopharmaceuticals. He highlighted the promising opportunities in India, particularly within Genome Valley. He expressed his confidence that the two-day conclave would provide a valuable platform for participants to learn, share ideas, and explore advancements in manufacturing, technology development, and clinical trials across all phases (1-4).

Gupta concluded his speech by envisioning a future where biologics take center stage, potentially offering long-lasting protection through a single vaccination instead of daily or multiple daily pill regimens.
