Minister D. Sridhar Babu on Hyderabad’s Leap into Global Healthcare

D. Sridhar Babu, the Minister for Industries and IT in Telangana, played a pivotal role in the successful hosting of recently concluded 2-day BioAsia 2025, facilitating significant global and local collaborations in the life sciences sector. His strategic vision and leadership were key to organizing this landmark event that showcased Hyderabad as a rising star on the international healthcare scene. Rashmi Kumari of Neo Science Hub engages him in this exclusive interview to explore the impacts and future prospects following the event.

This year’s BioAsia conference had an ambitious theme: “Catalysts of Change – Expanding Global Healthcare Frontiers, Transforming Healthcare with Innovation, Collaboration, and Progress.” What were the key takeaways from this event?

BioAsia 2025 has been a landmark event, not just for Hyderabad but for the global life sciences community. This year, we emphasized the transformative power of collaboration across sectors and borders. Key takeaways include significant commitments to investment, the introduction of innovative healthcare solutions, and the strengthening of our global partnerships. These elements are crucial as we aim to transform Hyderabad into a pivotal hub for global healthcare innovation.

With substantial investments announced, particularly the ₹5,445 crore for the Green Pharma City, what impact do you foresee on the local economy and job market?

The investments in Green Pharma City are a major boost for Hyderabad’s economy, expected to create approximately 9,800 jobs. This initiative not only fortifies our pharmaceutical sector but also positively affects the entire ecosystem, including education, research, and healthcare services. It’s a step towards making Hyderabad a global center for pharmaceutical manufacturing and research, providing high-quality jobs and reinforcing our economic foundations.

Can you elaborate on the collaborations with international entities like the University of Queensland and the World Economic Forum? How do these partnerships benefit the local life sciences sector?

Our collaboration with the University of Queensland is set to enhance our capabilities in digital healthcare and artificial intelligence, areas that are critical for the future of healthcare. Similarly, becoming the first hub under the World Economic Forum’s Indian Digital Health Activator program positions us to lead innovations in digital health. These partnerships help us leverage global expertise and integrate it with our local strengths, which is essential for advancing healthcare solutions that can benefit both our state and the world.

The presence of international pharmaceutical giants and new tech labs in Hyderabad was highlighted at BioAsia 2025. What does this mean for the city’s standing in the international life sciences community?

The commitment from international giants like MSD and the establishment of new facilities by companies such as Agilisium reflect Hyderabad’s growing reputation as a prime location for life sciences innovation. These developments attract further international attention and investment, creating a virtuous cycle of growth and innovation. Our city is increasingly seen not just as a market, but as a critical player in the global life sciences arena.

Looking ahead, what are the long-term goals for Hyderabad’s life sciences sector post-BioAsia 2025?

Post-BioAsia 2025, our long-term goals are to sustain the growth trajectory of Hyderabad’s life sciences sector. This includes expanding our research facilities, attracting more international businesses, and enhancing our educational programs to supply skilled professionals to this growing industry. We also aim to pioneer new healthcare technologies and practices that can set global standards. Ultimately, our vision is for Hyderabad to not only lead in pharmaceuticals but also in innovating healthcare solutions that address pressing global challenges.
