On December 8th, 2024, the skies over Hussain Sagar Lake in Hyderabad transformed into a canvas of breathtaking aerobatics and vibrant displays. This year’s air show, held by the Indian Air Force’s Surya Kiran Aerobatic Team (SKAT), was not just an exhibition of airborne prowess but also a celebration of technological advancements and local spirit under the banner of “PrajaPalana – PrajaVijayotsavalu,” marking the first anniversary of the Congress government in Telangana.
Objectives of the 2024 Air Show
The primary goal of the air show was multifaceted – to demonstrate the precision and capabilities of the Indian Air Force pilots, to engage and entertain the public, and to foster a sense of unity and pride among the local population. Moreover, the event served as a platform for showcasing the integration of cutting-edge technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI), into aerial performance and safety protocols.
Technological Innovations: Embracing AI
This year’s air show spotlighted the role of advanced technologies in enhancing aerial displays. The utilization of AI was a game-changer, facilitating real-time data analysis, optimizing flight paths, and simulating complex manoeuvres that enhance both the safety and spectacle of the performances. These technological integrations signify a leap towards modernizing traditional air shows, making them safer and more spectacular.
A Look Back: The Legacy of SKAT
The Surya Kiran Aerobatic Team, established in 1996, stands as Asia’s only nine-aircraft aerobatic squadron and among the few elite teams globally. With a history of over 700 shows, both in India and internationally, SKAT has been a standard-bearer of IAF’s excellence. Over the years, performances in countries such as China, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand, Singapore, and the UAE have not only demonstrated their flying prowess but also served as a testament to the professionalism and skill of the Indian Air Force.
The Spectacle of 2024
The 2024 air show in Hyderabad was a testament to the skill and spirit of the Surya Kiran pilots and their ground team. The Hawk Mk 132 aircraft, flown by the team, are particularly noted for their agility and suitability for complex aerobatic sequences. This year, the team performed loops, rolls, crosses, and inverted flying in extremely close formations, sometimes just five meters apart, under the skilled leadership of Group Captain Ajay Dasarathi.
Despite initial concerns about the weather, the skies cleared up just in time for the show, allowing thousands of spectators to enjoy the aerial feats without hindrance. The show’s success was also a logistical triumph, with well-managed crowd controls and safety measures ensuring that the event was both enjoyable and safe for all attendees.
The Hyderabad Air Show 2024 not only continued its legacy of providing awe-inspiring aerial displays but also embraced the future through its integration of AI and other technologies. It remains a significant event in Hyderabad’s cultural calendar, fostering community spirit and showcasing the technological strides in aviation and aerobatics. As the city looks forward to future shows, the evolving blend of tradition and innovation promises even more thrilling experiences in the skies above Hyderabad.
