A Leader Forged in Agricultural Science

The appointment of a new leader to an institution of global stature is always a moment of significance, but the selection of Dr.Himanshu Pathak to lead the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) represents a particularly strategic choice. His career is a testament to a deep and sustained commitment to agricultural science, marked by exceptional academic achievement, prolific research, and a steady ascent to the highest echelons of agricultural administration in India. This trajectory reveals a leader uniquely prepared for the specific challenges and opportunities facing ICRISAT today.

Dr. Pathak’s academic foundations are impeccable. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Agriculture (BSc (Ag.)) from the esteemed Banaras Hindu University in 1986, followed by a Master of Science (MSc) in 1988 and a Doctorate (PhD) in Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry in 1992 from the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), New Delhi. His performance was exemplary, achieving a perfect 4.0/4.0 Overall Grade Point Average (OGPA) in both his undergraduate and doctoral studies, signalling a prodigious scientific talent from the outset.

His professional life began at IARI, where he progressed from Scientist in 1992 to Principal Scientist, building a formidable research portfolio. His core research areas—soil science, climate change, abiotic stress management, and environmental pollution—are not merely academic interests; they are the central challenges confronting the 2.1 billion people living in the semi-arid tropics that constitute ICRISAT’s primary mandate. His scientific eminence is quantitatively demonstrated by a remarkable publication record of over 200 research papers, an h-index of 83, and more than 27,500 citations, which have earned him recognition as one of the top 2% of global scientists in agriculture by Stanford University.

This deep scientific expertise was progressively paired with significant administrative and leadership experience. Dr. Pathak served as Director of two of India’s premier research bodies: the ICAR-National Rice Research Institute (NRRI) in Cuttack and the ICAR-National Institute of Abiotic Stress Management (NIASM) in Baramati. This culminated in his appointment as Secretary of the Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE) and Director General of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) on August 1, 2022. In this capacity, he helmed one of the world’s largest and most complex national agricultural research systems, managing over 97 institutes, 53 universities, and a vast network of research projects.This experience provided him with an unparalleled understanding of managing large-scale research for development, a crucial prerequisite for leading a CGIAR center.

His profile is further distinguished by extensive international exposure. He has served as a visiting scientist and fellow at institutions in the United Kingdom (University of Essex), Germany (Institute of Meteorology and Climate Research), Australia (CSIRO Land and Water), and the Philippines (International Rice Research Institute – IRRI). Critically, his role as a Lead Author for the Inter-Governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) on both the 5th Assessment Report and the refinement of greenhouse gas inventories demonstrates his engagement with global science and policy at the highest levels.

 This career path illustrates a logical and meritocratic progression. The journey from a specialized scientist to a manager of specialized institutes, and ultimately to the head of the entire national research apparatus, provided the ideal blend of deep technical knowledge and high-level administrative capability required to lead an international center like ICRISAT.
