146 More Horses, Not One Tenth Faster: What Lamborghini’s Hybrids Really Bought

The Temerario and the Urus SE are the most sophisticated machines Sant’Agata has ever built — twin-turbo V8s laced with electric motors, 800-volt architecture, a V8 that spins to 10,000rpm. They are also heavier, and the most powerful Urus in history is not one tenth of a second quicker to 100kph than the lighter, weaker car it replaced. That is not a failure. It is the entire story of hybridisation, written in a single number.

On 1 July 2026, Lamborghini unveiled the Urus SE Performante: the most powerful SUV it has ever built. A 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 married to a permanent-magnet electric motor buried inside the ZF eight-speed gearbox, producing 812CV and 1,000Nm. That is 146CV and 150Nm more than the old, petrol-only Urus Performante it succeeds.

It reaches 100kph in 3.3 seconds. The old Performante, with 666CV, also reached 100kph in 3.3 seconds.

Nothing in the July 2026 issue of Autocar India — which put the Temerario and Urus SE on its cover and called the issue a celebration of the internal combustion engine in its finest form — is untrue. Both cars are outrageous. But that one number, 3.3 against 3.3, says more about what electrification has actually done to the supercar than any press release will. The hybrid Performante carries 323kg more than the car it replaces. Lamborghini added 146 horses and the battery ate every one of them.

What the engineers actually built

Understand first that this is not lazy engineering. It is some of the most ferocious problem-solving the industry has produced.

The Temerario, which replaces the Huracán and lands in India at ₹6 crore ex-showroom, is built around an all-new 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 with a flat-plane crankshaft that revs to 10,000rpm — an extraordinary figure for a turbocharged engine, and a deliberate answer to the central complaint about forced induction, which is that it strangles the top end. On its own the V8 makes 800CV and 730Nm, a specific output of roughly 197hp per litre. Three electric motors join it: two on the front axle, one integrated with the engine. Total system output is 920CV. Zero to 100kph takes 2.7 seconds; top speed is 343kph.

The battery is the tell. It holds just 3.8kWh. This is not a car designed to drive on electricity; it is a car that uses electricity as a tool. The two front motors deliver torque vectoring — individually varying thrust to each front wheel to rotate the car into a corner. The engine-mounted motor fills the torque hole while the turbos spool, the classic sin of forced induction. An 800-volt architecture makes the whole system light and fast-reacting. The result is Lamborghini’s first Drift Mode, and thirteen driving programmes. The electric motors are not there to save the planet. They are there to do things a combustion engine physically cannot.

The chassis matches the ambition: a new aluminium spaceframe over 20 per cent stiffer in torsion than the Huracán’s, with 103 per cent more rear downforce than the Huracán EVO — 158 per cent with the optional Alleggerita package, which strips out more than 25kg. And, tellingly for a brand built on discomfort, 34mm more headroom and 46mm more legroom, enough for a 200cm driver.

The Urus SE Performante attacks the same problem from the opposite end. Its battery is 25.9kWh — nearly seven times the Temerario’s — and it will run more than 60km on electricity alone. This is a compliance hybrid where the Temerario is a performance hybrid, and the engineering effort went into damage control. Carbon fibre covers the bonnet, roof, wheel arches, side skirts and the largest diffuser ever fitted to an Urus. A titanium Akrapovič exhaust saves 10kg. The result of all that: 32kg lighter than the standard Urus SE, at 2,473kg — which still makes it the second-heaviest Lamborghini ever built, behind only the LM002.

What that weight bought back is dynamics. The new AURA dual-chamber air suspension — two chambers, two valves, varying spring stiffness and damping independently by mode — cuts body roll by 55 per cent while reducing vibration by 25 per cent, addressing the brutal ride that defined the old Performante. The track is 16mm wider. Braking improves 10 per cent, using an Integrated Power Brake system and a six-degrees-of-freedom sensor first seen on the Fenomeno. Drag falls 3 per cent; downforce rises 23 per cent over the Urus SE. There is a new Rally mode for gravel.

This is real engineering, and it works. Lamborghini simply had to spend all of it standing still.

Why they did it anyway

If hybridisation does not make these cars meaningfully faster in a straight line, why hybridise?

The honest answer is regulation, and Lamborghini has never seriously pretended otherwise. Fleet CO2 rules and Euro 7 make a range of naturally aspirated V10s and V12s legally impossible to sell in Europe. The plug-in hybrid is the instrument that lets Sant’Agata keep building twelve- and eight-cylinder engines at all. The Revuelto pairs a V12 with three motors; the Urus went hybrid-only in 2024, killing the petrol S and Performante outright; the Temerario completes the transition. Under the Direzione Cor Tauri strategy, every Lamborghini on sale is now a plug-in hybrid.

What is remarkable is what the engineers did with a compliance mandate. Handed a battery they did not want and weight they could not avoid, they used the electric hardware to invent capabilities the combustion car never had: torque fill, torque vectoring, drift modes, instant response. The Temerario is a better driver’s car than the Huracán in ways that have nothing to do with lap times. That is engineering as alchemy — turning a legal obligation into a genuine advance.

But it should be called what it is. The word in the brief for this story is that hybrids deliver “clean, modern driving dynamics.” The dynamics are modern. Nothing about a 2,473kg SUV with a twin-turbo V8 and 60km of electric range is clean, and Lamborghini’s own numbers say so. Claimed fuel consumption for the Temerario is around 8.93kpl. These are magnificent objects. They are not environmental ones, and the engineering deserves better than to be sold as penance.

The future that keeps receding

Here is the part the celebration misses. The hybrid was supposed to be a bridge. It has quietly become the destination.

When Lamborghini announced Direzione Cor Tauri in 2021, the roadmap was explicit: hybridise the range, then launch the first fully electric Lamborghini in 2028, followed by an electric Super SUV in 2029, with a 50 per cent CO2 cut by 2025 and 80 per cent by 2030 en route to carbon neutrality by 2050. The Lanzador concept — a 2+2 Gran Turismo with over a megawatt of power — debuted at Monterey in 2023 as the shape of that future.

The Lanzador slipped to 2029. Then it was reconfigured from a battery-electric car into a plug-in hybrid. Then it was delayed indefinitely. Chairman and CEO Stephan Winkelmann has been blunt about why: customers, he says, do not see a battery-electric car as an alternative today, and building one now would be a bad offer. They want, in his phrase, the sound and the emotion. In May 2026 he said delaying the EV had been the right way to go, and expressed no regrets. Lamborghini’s 2025 accounts recorded the cost of that reversal explicitly — operating income of €768 million at a 24 per cent margin, slightly down partly because of the expense of switching the Lanzador from electric to hybrid.

The company is thriving on this decision. 2025 brought a record 10,747 deliveries, its fifth consecutive record year, led by the Urus. The 2026 launches are a Revuelto Roadster and a hybrid Performante. Lamborghini’s hedge for the 2035 European engine ban is not batteries but synthetic fuel — e-fuels that would let it keep making V8s and V12s indefinitely.

And this matters far beyond Sant’Agata. Volkswagen is executing the largest restructuring in its history: up to 100,000 jobs at risk, factories closing, half its global model portfolio to be cut by 2030. The Financial Times reports that advisers are urging VW to raise cash by selling Ducati or floating Lamborghini — a brand bought through Audi in 1998 for about $110 million and valued by Bloomberg Intelligence today at more than $22 billion, throwing off some $888 million of profit a year. Lamborghini is one of the most valuable assets in the group precisely because it sells V8s and V12s. The commercial logic and the regulatory logic point in opposite directions, and for now commerce is winning.

The Indian reading

For Indian readers there is a sharper irony, and it is fiscal.

Under GST 2.0, effective from 22 September 2025, luxury cars and larger hybrids are taxed at 40 per cent, with the compensation cess abolished. Electric vehicles remain at 5 per cent. Read that carefully: India’s tax code makes no distinction whatsoever between a plug-in hybrid Urus SE and a hypothetical petrol-only one. Both sit in the same 40 per cent slab. The battery, the electric motor, the 60km of zero-emission range, the several hundred kilograms of engineering compromise — all of it earns precisely nothing in Indian tax treatment. Stack that on import duties that routinely take a CBU supercar to two or three times its overseas price, and the Urus SE lands at ₹4.57 crore ex-showroom, about ₹5.32 crore on road, with a waiting list of roughly a year.

So in India, the hybrid system is pure cost. It adds weight, complexity and price, and delivers a regulatory benefit that exists in Brussels and not in Delhi. Its 60km of electric range presumes home charging that most Indian buyers of a ₹5 crore SUV will use, at best, as a party trick. Lamborghini delivered 111 cars in India in 2025 — a small number, but from a market the company calls strategically important, and one where the Urus SE Performante has not yet been confirmed.

There is a deeper convergence, though, and Autocar India’s own July issue contains it. Alongside the Lamborghinis, the magazine reports that India now has E85 pumps dispensing fuel roughly ₹20 a litre cheaper than E20. India’s answer to the cleaner combustion engine is ethanol. Lamborghini’s answer is synthetic fuel. Both are the same instinct expressed at opposite ends of the market: keep the engine, change what you feed it. Whether either is a genuine climate strategy or an elegant deferral is the question neither industry wants asked too loudly.

The verdict

The Temerario and the Urus SE deserve their cover. They are the most technically accomplished cars Lamborghini has made — and the Temerario, with its 10,000rpm V8 and its three motors doing work no engine could, is arguably the most interesting supercar of the decade.

But the honest reading of the hybrid transition is not that it made these cars better. It is that it made them possible. Electrification arrived as a legal requirement, and Lamborghini’s engineers turned it into a driving experience. What it did not do was make anything cleaner, or, in the Urus’s case, faster. What it bought was time — time for the V8 and the V12 to survive another decade while the industry works out whether e-fuels can carry them further.

The Raging Bull still has its horns. It is worth being clear-eyed about what it had to carry to keep them.
