Prof. Satyanarayanan R Chakravarthy is a distinguished professor in the Department of Aerospace Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras), Chennai, India. His academic journey began at IIT Madras, where he obtained his Bachelor of Technology in Aerospace Engineering in 1991. He further enhanced his expertise with a Master of Science in Aerospace Engineering in 1992 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1995, both from the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, USA.
After completing a post-doctoral stint at Georgia Tech, Prof. Chakravarthy joined IIT Madras as an Assistant Professor in 1998 and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2003 and Professor in 2009. His research primarily focuses on propulsion and combustion, investigating various aspects of combustion in gas turbine and rocket engines. He is the head of the National Centre for Combustion Research and Development (NCCRD) at IIT Madras, which is supported by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. This center is recognized as the largest of its kind globally, and Prof. Chakravarthy has spearheaded numerous industry projects in areas like automotive, aerospace, thermal power, and fire research.
In addition to his academic contributions, Prof. Chakravarthy is a serial entrepreneur involved in multiple startups. He is the founder and technical lead of The ePlane Company, which focuses on developing hybrid aerial vehicles for vertical takeoff and landing. He also serves as a Director at Agnikul Cosmos, Aerostrovilos, and X2Fuels & Energy, exploring innovations in satellite launch vehicles, micro gas turbines, and waste-to-energy technologies, respectively.
Prof. Chakravarthy has received numerous awards, including the HAL Prize, the Young Engineer Award from the Indian National Academy of Engineering, and multiple recognitions from the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) for his academic excellence and contributions to aerospace engineering.
